Pangkor Laut or Langkawi

Please some one help! My husband and I are looking to travel to either/or Pangkor Laut and Tanjung Rhu Langkawi for our 25th anniversay in June 2010. We are looking for luxury, peace, good food and lovely surroundings, and obviously weather! I believe the weather could be rainy, does any one have feedback. Also, has anyone travelled to both and do they have recommendations, what sort of food budget should we allow for Pangkor. Would you recommend combining two islands, just a bit wary of the long journey home from Pangkor, what could we expect. Keen to get this booked, but currently going round in circles. Help!

Hi Tracy,

Congratulations, 25th anniversary? I just had my honeymoon at the Datai at Langkawi. But I also went to Tanjung Rhu to try out one of their restaurants and to have a glimpse of the amazing beach. How much time do you have in M'sia? Personally, I would prefer Langkawi. I've not been to Pangkor Laut but I have friends who went there. It is a fantastic resort but then I think the island has little to offer. Langkawi on the other hand has more to offer as it is a bigger island. You could even do a mangrove tour which is near to Tanjung Rhu. I think Tanjung Rhu does an all inclusive package which includes all your meals. I think Pangkor Laut also does that, have a look on their website or call up their reservation centre to enquire the price if necessary. Happy planning.

Hi, I travelled in May/June. The weather was fine, very hot and didn't rain much.

Hello,

It depends what type of beach holiday are you looking for. Langkawi is a large island with many types of beach resorts which caters to all budgets/preferences. Langkawi, being a much larger island has a larger town and lots of different types of tourist places to visit such as Crocodile farms and duty-free shopping malls. So you can still have a beach style holiday and still go into town to visit all the tourist spots. But beware, as Langkawi is very touristy spot and with that comes all the usual touristy traps and scams.

Since it would be your 25th anniversay, you might be interested in more of a "romantic" or at the very least a more intimate beach holiday. In that case, I would recommend Pangkor Laut and this is a beach resort famous for its more romantic/coupley environment because of its secluded and out of the way location. But the place it lovely and the resort prides itself of its great service. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who are beach bums and on a romantic getaway with great natural sceneries.

In regards to food, Pangkor Laut is such a secluded place that there are no other restaurants available on the island so you have to eat at the hotel itself. Because of this, the prices on the menu can be quite pricey and expecially if you include alcoholic drinks (since Malaysia is a Muslim country, the tax on booze is ridiculous!). You should check the website for the Pangkor Laut resort as they sometimes offer some great packages which includes all your meals. Langkawi will offer you much more freedom in terms of food. You will always have the choice of dining in your hotel or you can always hop on a taxi and eat at a restaurant in town instead.

In reagards to the weather, June is a good time to visit. The monsoon season is way over by then though you can never tell with the climate change these days. Rain in the tropics tend to be really heavy but unlike English rain, they tend to stop after a couple of hours and the sun comes out so I wouldn't really worry about that too much.

I hope that helps with your queries and hope you have a fantastic anniversary!

Hi T,

Congrats on the silver anniversary! June weather is great at Pangkor. Sun, sun, sun! I've been to Tanjoug Rhu for a walk around but have not stayed there before so I would have to recommend Pangkor Laut. You have the peace, luxury, gorgeous surroundings and attentive staff willing to jump at every beck and call. If you want quiet, book a Spa Villa. No children allowed in the entire 4 acres! Tranquil and relaxing. You can always try your luck and book a Sea Viila room and request an upgrade because it your anniversary. You'll most likely get it.

If you tire of the menu's speak with any member of the staff, they can arrange anything you like! Food can be expensive. Malaysia being a muslim country alcohol can be expensive but, a drink at Pangkor Laut is the smae price as many places in Kuala Lumpur. Langkawi is a duty free island for alcohol is far less expensive there.

If your concerned of traveling from KL to Pangkor, Berjaya Air does a flight 5 times a weel from Subang airport in Kuala Lumpur to Pangkor Island. Pangkor Lauts staff will greet you there and escort you to the resort.

Best advise is to make yourself know upon arrival, meet with a manager or liaison and they be sure you have a fantastic stay!

Regards
