Tours at the Penang National Park
Save

Morning,

A couple of queries:

1. Is the Park worth a visit?

2. Does the Park have organised tours or do we just do our own thing?

3. Within the Park, are there some key spots to go to?

4. Where would we catch a bus from Georgetown to go to the Park, and which one?

Many thanks

1. Yes

2. Do your own thing

3. Yes - Muka Head, the light house & monkey beach in one direction. The other main trail takes you to the meromictic lake, Kerachut beach and a small turtle sanctuary.

4. Bus 101 - stops about 400 / 500 meters from the park entrance (no shade as you walk from the stop to the park). Bus 101 stops in numerous places in Penang - you have to decide which is best for you: Gat Lebuh Chulia - Lebuh Chulia - Jalan Penang - Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong - Jalan Ria - Komtar - Jalan Magazine - Jalan Penang - Jalan Burma - Jalan Perak - Jalan Burma

Takes lots of water with you.

Hi,

You could explore on your own, or if you search the web, there's private nature guide available for hire.

At the park's main gate, there are boat operators that can bring you on boat trip to Pantai Kerachut/Meromictic lake/Turtle sanctuary/Mangrove, the duration is about 4hrs, the charges is based on per boat, which can take 10-12 people.

In July, we(group of 8 people, including 5 elders>55yo) trekked to Monkey Beach, and return by boat. Took us some 3hrs to trek there, but it was only 5mins boat ride back.

By the way, there's a canopy walk in the park, the tickets are sold at the information and registration office at the park entrance only, remember to get the tickets first before trek all the way to the canopy walk.

Have seen bus101 and 102 stopped at the gate.

Take lots of water and some snacks too, no food/drinks seller in the park

Many thanks for that information, esorlegin and AmiTeh.

As my wife is recovering from a recent foot operation, long walks are probably not on the agenda. This, the boat trip mentioned by AmiTeh sounds more likely.

For interest, do you have an idea of the boat charge (for 10-12 people)?

How frequently do the boats leave?

Do they leave from within the park?

How far is the canopy walk from the park's main gate?

Many thanks.

Hi,

For the 4hrs boat trip, per boat charge was quoted to me at MYR350. Can leave anytime if the boat is there. Basically, you charter the whole boat to yourself, so, it'd be best if you have a group of people then you can share out the cost. The boat leaves near the park's main gate. The information and registration office is about 30m from the gate, and the park entrance is next to the office.

The canopy walk is about 45 mins walk from the park's entrance. From the entrance, the first 500m or so is paved and flat walkway, leading to a wooden bridge. After that, there are two trails to the canopy walk. Previously, we took the one on our right, trekking through trail that is next to the ravine, along the coast, and reached a junction where we turn left into the picnic area of sungai tukun and saw the "exit" staircase of the canopy walk first. After that, I thought that it'd probably be nearer should we have taken the other trail on the left after the wooden bridge.

Please note that the canopy walk is closed on Friday. The opening hour is 1000-1300hr, 1430-1600hr, Mon-Thur, Sat, and Sun.

The rangers/guards at the office were very helpful and gave good advice about the park when asked.
