east versus west?

Hi all,

I have 2wks in Sabah so don't want to be flying from one side of the island to the other. I was just wondering which side of the island people would recommend I'm 28 so like the odd drink but am not particularly into cities more beach bars. I'm not sure if there are such places.I mainly want to see the the Wildlife on the Island, Orangutans, Elephants etc and would like to do some Snorkelling

I don't mind plush hotels but also like the whole backpacking thing to as I don't want to be surrounded by all inclusive places with lots of children etc.

I was just wondering if I should go to Kota Kinabalu or if I might find it to commercialised and touristy, my other plan was to go to Sandakan go to Sepilok then make my way down to the Dragon inn at Tawau. Does anyone have an opinion or recommendations they could give me please.

Many thanks

hi Gemma

Suggest you start in Kota Kinabalu & work your way to the East Coast (Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau & to the dive spots)

Kota Kinabalu is a nice laid back City....Here's a suggestion so you dont need to go back & forth :

Kota Kinabalu - Kinabalu National Park (Mt Kinabalu Climb-2Days)-Sandakan (Sepilok) - Sukau - Lahad Datu, Danum Valley - Tawau & to the Dive spots.

There are also some nice islands within 15-20 minutes boat ride from Kota Kinabalu. If it's wildlife you're looking for, you cant miss Sukau (river Cruised, Proboscis Monkeys), Danum Valley (Borneo rainforest logde...Smack in the middle of a Conservation area) & Sepilok (Org Hutan Rehab Centre)

Have fun.....
