Is Sabah safe to go?

Is it safe to go to Sabah? I heard the first kidnapping of locals & foreign people were in 2000, Abu Sayyeh are responsible for the kidnapping w/c has a link with Osama Laden terrorist?

If you are worried, then don't travel there, and stay at home [afterall NYC is safe from Bin Laden, isn't it??]. But there have not been any kidnapping since. The kidnappings where from remote dive resorts. Many thousands of tourists visit every year since.

Yes is it safe.

The annoying US travel advisory is a stubborn reminder that since 9/11 the US errs on the side of caution regardless of actual reality.

The most north-eastern part of Sabah is relatively close (about 3 hours by speed boat) to the most south-western part of the Philippines, which is where the unfortunately acronym'ed fundamentalist group MILF is based.

However, the border is heavily monitored to prevent a repeat of those tourism industry damaging events that took place a decade ago.

So travel to Sabah with peace of mind; we are as safe, if not safer, as any other destination.
