March 2013 is Sabah Safe

I booked to travel to Sabah months ago. Im due to fly out next Wednesday to Miri. Is the area safe? I hear a civil war coming on?

Anyone there know anything

Your question is very vague,Sabah is a big place.

There is no civil war there, only foreign arm intruder/terrorist from other countries

Miri is not even in Sabah. It is in Sarawak. You have nothing to worry about if it is there that you are going.

Civil War implies Malaysians fighting against Malaysians. This is not what is happening. A band of armed bandits from Sulu in the Phillipines landed in an isolated small village called Tanduo, on the eastern coast of Sabah, 130km away from the nearest east coast town of Lahad Datu. The bandits have been surrounded by the Malaysian police and armed forces and are being contained. A separate incident occurred in a water village in Semporna, also on the eastern seaboard.

The west coast of Sabah, the state capital Kota Kinabalu and the hinterland are far far away and not affected by the incursion.

OK I tend to mistrust statements from agencies of the government whose main purpose is to keep the tourist dollar flowing. (RE: sabahtourismn.com/...) Is there anyone on the ground in Kota Kinabalu who can affirm that the shops are open and business is as usual?

Thanks (we will arrive on March 8 if all is well )

Well, we have already told you that it is business as usual in Kota Kinabalu and the west coast of Sabah. If you do not believe us, then by all means cancel your trip.

I have just returned from the East Coast of Sabah, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu and Danum Valley. I am a frequent traveller to this area for forestry work and recreation (wildlife observation, bird watching and photography).

I was surprised by how peaceful the region is, considering the media hype and fear mongering on social media back in early March. This is definitely NOT a war zone. Life appears to have returned to normal sometime end of March, after the heavy handed crack-down by Malaysian Authorities.

Now is definately the best time ever to travel to this region. Hotels, lodges, camps, and homestays, restaurants, caves, river cruises and cultural sites are all virtually empty...

All the large tourist groups are staying away, because of international travel warnings. Sadly, these warnings don't appear to be able to distinguish between isolated geographic locations, and group the entire east coast of Sabah, of more than 1000km of coast line, into one location for convenience of reporting.

From talking to local friends, it appears that in all the height of the Tanduo incident and public over reaction, that there was not even any hint of trouble in peaceful East Coast destinations such as Sandakan or even Kinabatangan... a clear downside of unsupported social media hype.

Hello everyone,

I was planning to visit Kota Kinabalu (Shangri-La's Rosa Ria Resort) on September. Could you please give me an update on the situation over there? Is it safe to visit?

Thank you in advance!

The situation in Sabah is fine. It is certainly safe to visit.

I am going myself in June and staying at Rasa Ria. This will be my eleventh time.

There has never been a problem in that area of Sabah.
