Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort

Staying in this resort for 3 nights at start of April. It's a package booked with Air Asia from Johor Bahru. Any information on the hotel would be greatly appreciated especially recommendations for nearby restaurants, bars, shopping, etc. Also any details of excursions available from the hotel to see orangutangs. If anyone else has done this package with Air Asia was an upgrade offered and if so to what type of room and for what cost.

Hi Tam Carr,

To book excursions, there is a few travel agents at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort (STAR). So you can either just go direct to the agents to book orangutans, but it will depend on flights availibility (if you are planning to go to Sepilok, which is located in Sandakan, about 45minutes by flight). Other option is you can go to Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort(about 45 minutes drive from STAR). They have a Nature Reserve where you can see Orang Utans, but it will depend on availibility as well as it is more for the in-house guests staying at the resort. If you are interested to do Sepilok in Sandakan, you can either do just the Sepilok Orang Utan, or you can combine Sepilok with Sandakan City Tour or Sepilok with Mangrove River Cruise where you can see the Probocsis Monkeys. If you are interested to do overnight trip in Sandakan, you can combine the Sepilok Orang Utan trip with Selingan Turtle Island and Sukau, Kinabatangan River for a 3 Days/ 2 Nights Trip. If you love wildlife, you can spend 2 nights stay at Sukau(more river cruise to search for monkeys, birds). It's good if you have your binocular with you. But it is not a guarantee that you will see Proboscis Monkeys, Orangs Utans, Turtles or other wildlife though, but chances of seeing them is quite high. If you see elephant at Sukau, that will be a big bonus for you!

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the answer but as it's only a 3 night stay we have no plans to go to Sepilok and will have to hope that a visit to the other Shangri-la Resort is available.

We would still welcome any other information about local attractions, restaurants, bars, etc.

Hi again,

It's not necessary to do overnight trips to Sandakan, as you can do Sepilok for a day trip. Just depends on which return flight from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu you choose to book. And also, depends on the combination of tours you choose. Daily flights are available from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and return. Most travel agents book the first flight from Kota Kinabalu departs at 7:30 am and arrive Sandakan at about 8:10 am to go for the first feeding time at 10am at Sepilok Centre. Chances are much more better to see the Orang Utans in the morning as they are more hungrier.

Hi Tam, we stayed in this fab hotel May / June of 2006 it is agreat place , we upgraded to the Horizon club it is definately worth considering ,however you will need to get a cab into town to get to some bars, 15 mins max. Re: tours and stuff, get yourself along to the jetty and see the guy's at Borneo Beach bums, get over to one of the islands, Sapi is prob the best, however, try to avoid weekends. Also a trip to the Klias wetlands is good, looking for proboscis monkeys , you will see plenty.

Any other info drop us a line

Cheers

Jamie and Suzanne

PS Have a drink with Raza, the barman in the lobby lounge great kid and full of fun

I just returned from Malaysia, Borneo, where I stayed at STAR. To dine in hotel is very very costly, about 10 times normal prices in city! So we went every night either to Tanjung Aru beach, where you can find restaurants serving fresh seafood, local specialties and enjoy cultural show every night 7-8 p.m.!Tanjung Aru beach is just 10 min to walk from hotel, so it's reasonable in terms of distance, variety of food and prices. Breakfast buffet is huge, so we never took lunch. Thursday is Ladies' night at Note night club: Margherita cocktails are free for women (free flow all night).

To go to KK you can take taxi, costs 15RM or take a bus for 1.20RM per person!at reception they will never tell you that, because they are trying to sell and push taxi rides..Bus goes from security gate about 3 times an hour to KK city centre. Local people are very friendly, so they will advise for where to step out, etc.

Beach is very small at STAR and water is not clear..Take boat taxi to islands, costs 40RM per person, goes every hour-there is perfect to snorkel, have a lunch, swim. We went to Manukan, it was great. Don't forget to take swimming shoes, stepping on corals or fishes (that look like corals) might be dangerous!

As per excursions, we took Poring hot springs/K Kinabalu for 180RM from Wildlife Expeditions travel agent. Guide was great, we also saw Rafflesia that day, without taking an extra excursion. These flowers are growing on farmers' land, so whenever it blooms, they will inform travel agents, tourist centre, etc, so you can visit the farm on the way and see this biggest flower in the world for some 20RM.

For SPA treatments, I would advise also to go to city, where foot reflexology costs just 20RM (40min massage) for the same quality.

Hope this information would be useful for you.
