Rasa Ria orangutans....How to book? contacts??

I cannot find where to book for the orangutan experience at Rasa Ria. I have searched all over their hotel website. What am I missing???? Also, is it risky just to wait and book when we arrive in KK. We will be their 6 nights with a loose itinerary. Hope you can help Thanks

You are usually OK if you book a couple of days before you want to see the Orangs.

You can book by ringing the Hotel (60 88)792 888 and ask for the Nature Interpretation Centre.

You could also Email the hotel at rrr@shangri-la.com

There are 2 sessions at 10am and 2pm each day.

If you are staying at the Resort just go to the resort activities desk to book.

If you are staying at Shangri-la Tanjung Aru they arrange trips to Rasa Ria to see the Orangs.

We were in KK earlier in the month and went to Rasa Ria to see the organutans and only booked thru our hotel (Le Meridien) the day before. It cost 30 ringet each plus cab fares of 160ringet from Le Meridien. It was good, but I wish we had gone to Sepilok instead!

If you plan for a day trip to Sepilok it is a very long day. You have to fly from KK to Sandakan on an early morning, then get transport (Taxi) to Sepilok and then catch a flight back. You need to also factor in the cost of air fares etc into the trip.

I have been to Sepilok and I found three problems

there were a lot of visitors (over 100 I would guess) and it was very crowded on the viewing platforms. You are also not guaranteed that you will see Orangs as they well progressed in rehabilitation and are semi wild. You do not get very close to them

At Rasa Ria numbers are limited, around 40 people, the Orangs are young and in early stages of rehabilitation. If you have patience you will get very close to them. At neither place do you get to touch or handle Orangs.

We have booked to go to Sandakan via Air Asia mainly to see the Memorial, and were also planning to go to Sepilok, but my husband took sick so we could not fly. At Rasa Ria I felt (my opinion only) they were in a controlled area and the day we went we only saw 2. I actually wanted to see the Orangutans in the wild and adults. I enjoyed Rasa Ria, but felt to obtain the whole experience, we would have been better off at Sepilok. The flights via Air Asia were just so cheap, but I agree it would have been an extremely long day!

We've just come back and had a great time visiting the orang utans at Rasa Ria. We read the website and emailed them; they told us to book 72 hours beforehand. We rang every day and left messages but no-one answered our calls or returned them. On the second-last day, we were panicking a bit as this was the main thing we wanted to see. By chance, we were walking to Jessleton Point and went into the Tourist Bureau and Nelly booked us in. I have the feeling that perhaps you have to speak Malay to get a response by phone? On checking when we got home, they had emailed us back, but as I'd explained, we were relying n internet cafes and couldn't get to one all the time. Still, we were booked, got our own taxi out there (120RM and he waited for the four hours for us) and had the best time! Rasa Ria don;t let you book well in advance, but don't answer their phones, I guess the best bet is to use the tourist bureau to make sure.

Coulinjo

Glad you had a great time visiting the Orangutans at Rasa Ria. We've just come back from Borneo, staying at the Nexus, and we phoned the Rasa Ria direct and were able to book two days in advance. And we spoke english.

Perhaps its down to who you speak to, as we did get passed onto about three different people. It was worth it though :) Gorgeous little creatures!

We were in Borneo last year and visited Semenngoh (Kuching), Rasa Ria (KK) and Sepilok (Sandakan) - yes we like orangutans! Both Rasa ria and Semenngoh were wonderful but I wouldnt rush back to Sepilok. It was crowded with tourists and much more commercialised than the other two. The work that they all do is fabulous and this isn't a criticism of what they are doing at Sepilok but we definitely preferred the other two centres. We booked Rasa ria the day before without any problem through a local tourist booking office in KK

here is a copy of an email from two weeks ago, they also have many great walks

Greeting from Shangri-la's Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

Many thanks for the email received today. Wish to inform that the enrollment for Orangutan viewing and other nature related activities is accepted 72 hours prior to the actual day of the visit only. Advise to book at our Nature Interpretation Centre upon arrival or contact us for reservation. For your information, the viewing is scheduled twice a day at 1000hrs and the second viewing would be at 1400hrs. The main reasons of the policy being set is to avoid disappointment toward visitors, medical check up of the Orang Utan will be carried out as and when (no specific day) by Sabah Wildlife Department, also sometime the Orang Utan under quarantine due unforeseen circumstances. To assist you with your planning, we are pleased to attached herewith our nature reserve fact sheet activities information for your perusal.

Again, thank you and have a pleasant day ahead
