Any other park except Bako

Don't get me wrong, Bako is great, but I think there are two serious caveats with it:

- Getting in/transportation. You are FORCED to pay 200RM boat transfer fee and there are no alternatives

- A good physical fitness is required even for very short hikes duet to the fact that you need to first hike up until real trails start. That hike up is strenuous, trust me.

So, question is - is there any other alternative within no more than 2.5h drive time from Kuching with trails, scenery and rainforest?

Thanks.

several places - but most of the parks are in uplands (hilly areas)

Kubah National Park is close - about an hour.

Look here for ideas:

You may wanna consider Orchid Garden which is across the Sarawak River near the DUN (Dewan Undangan Negeri or State Legislative Building). The recently-completed 'S' shaped bridge connects it at the Old Court House - currently the most popular spot to be in Kuching. Ancient/modern buildings, river, bridge, small boat, riverfront activities, sunset, music and sweet aroma of steak from nearby bistro...just the right combo for romance!

If you do cross the river, there is a good Muslim food court in the kampung - you can see it from the River Side walk.

Just for the record, the boat ride costs 20 myr each way, not 200.

As for the Orchid garden, it is a garden, nothing comparable to a national park. A nice walk for half an hour among flowers.

I am sorry but when I was there last year only small boats carrying 4 people were available and round trip was 200RM per boat. You had a choice either pay that amount and get there or not pay and stay ashore.

The boatmen often have 'flexible' prices - depending upon where they think you come from. RM20 - RM25 per person each way is average (Rm40 - Rm50 for the round trip), but the unwary could end up paying more.

I was there recently, and maybe it is a new system, but you don't pay the boatmen - you buy the ticket at a counter both in Bako village and in Bako National Park, and the price is 20 ringgits one way. You also have the option to buy a return for RM40. After buying the ticket in the village, we had to wait maybe 20 minutes, and in the park, they actually have a timetable.

If can find out the tide situation then try to take the boat from Bako Village during low tide.

It will drop you off near the registration area and you can wade from the boat.

This will save you a kilometer walk back from the normal boat ramp.

Bus from town 3.50 MYR pp each way.

Boat 40 MYR per person return ( purchase at the ticket counter ).

Park entry fee 20 MYR pp.

For the return boat ride you must take your return ticket to Boat building next door

to the cafe and book for the return boat. If a crowd is there this is a must else you

will find yourself bumped of the boat by others who have booked.

Avoid carry plastic bags and especial visible food. The monkeys are VERY insistent.

If you attempt to take food to the outdoor area it will most likely not make it to the table.

Sorry to say but you are advised to take your own food to avoid possibility of Bako Belly.

If food isn't sold at breakfast then it becomes lunch or dinner. In quiet times it

could even become the next day's breakfast.
