Need a guide or driver

Hello, I'm looking to take a day trip or 2 into the nearby jungle in June (27th - 28th) and was wondering if anybody had a recs for a decent guide and/or driver?

I forget to mention it's only for 1 person.

I can recommend James - you can contact him at saratour68@yahoo.com.

He knows his stuff, is trustworthy and reliable. Speaks English, Malay, Mandarin and Foo Chow (or is is Hokkien?)

We absolutely concur with Esor's recommendation!!!!!

As a result of a prior post telling of James, we contacted him and arranged to spend two days sightseeing around Kuching.

James is awesome, a really nice guy. He is a safe driver, knows his way around. We LOVED that he enjoyed the sightseeing just as much as we did, even though he must've been to each many times before.

You really cannot go wrong with him!

Oh, and if James does read this (as he does visit the forum occasionally), we promise we will get our Kuching pics on line, promise! Sorry, been a bit slack ;o)

I am interested in the tour guide that you mentioned. We would like to visit Bako as well as 3-4 days of other things so possibly a week in total.

Is he a licensed tour guide ?

Thanks

A 'Tour Guide Licence' is not worth the paper it is written on. Some, so called, licensed guides have as much knowledge as a house brick - some are dishonest/dangerous.

The problem - it is easy to get a guide licence if you pay the right people or know a good forger (there are many in Malaysia).

To be honest, we wouldn't have a clue regarding licence. For what it's worth, we wouldn't consider using anyone else while in Kuching. While we only spent a couple of days with James, we've kept in touch since, and we consider him to be a friend. We are really looking forward to catching up with him when we return to Kuching in September!

James will listen to your ideas, and make additional suggestions. He can help you group sights together to get the most out of your day. And to top it off, while you are out and about with him he is just as excited and enthusiastic about each destination as though it was his first time visiting (except that he knew how to get the best out of each destination).

Can't hurt to drop him a line :-)

esorlegin is correct on saying licensed guides are of the majority not worth your time and money. But you must know that these guides tend to be attached to tour companies.

In the case of places like Bako NP if you take a guide you need one which is licensed for that park. There are only 3 guides there worth their salt in working hard and being honest.

In the other NP's there is no need for a guide except for maybe Gading. Most times the rafflesia is off the track so hard to explain to you. These guides charge RM30.00 a pop for 1 - 5 persons so still cheap if you average it out between a few persons.

For general tours you can stick to esorlegin's suggestion.

p/s the guiding fee for Bako goes to the guide directly. the fee for gading goes to the park. the guides there work for the park on a fixed salary so tipping them however little is always appreciated.
