Flew into Kuching on 22/9 on Air Asia Sydney / KL / Kuching. Air Asia was quite acceptable as we left a few minutes late in Sydney which was made up in the air actually arriving a few minutes ahead of time at 17:25 in KL. We then had a 5 hour wait, most of which was spent in the "Red Carpet" lounge in LCCT. The lounge was great and assisted in passing the time. After a late flight into Kuching we arrived at our Hotel - Ariva Gateway just after midnight. (See separate review).
After a few hours sleep, we were up reasonably early to go to the Saturday Market. This market was great with a wide range of food and nick-nack stalls and well set out. After this we walked back into town and enjoyed the Sarawak Museum. It was cool with a great display on indigenous artifacts and replica longhouse. Also had a quick look in the attached aquarium. After a walk on the waterfront, we made or way to an open air kitchen called something like BBQ King / Palace etc for some Kolo Mee. The noodles were excellent, soft , springy and very tasty. After that time for some shopping and then to Top Spot for Dinner. This place was so good we ate there 3 nights. Very fresh seafood and very cheap.
Next day we were off to Bako. Caught a taxi from town and then a boat for the 3 of us. Had an enjoyable time there and saw so much wildlife. Walked one of the "easy" tracks - wow it quite difficult walking on tree roots, rocks etc but the beach was nice when we got there. RM 100 return for the taxi. Ate again at Top Spot that night.
On Tuesday we flew to Miri for the day. Wanted to go to the petroluem museum, but it was hosting a dinosaur display. Our 7 yo really loved it and could have spent hours at the interactive exhibits.
Our final full day was Wednesday which called for an early start for our trip to Semmengoh. This was a top morning as we saw 4 orangutans - much less commercial than Sepilok in Sabah. We then went to the Cat Museum - this was quite a surprise and better than we were expecting. Heaps of Cat displays. Hired a taxi for RM 120 for both places. Enjoyed a late lunch in a Nasi Kandar near our hotel.
The following day we were off to Penang after a frantic trip due to road work and all the Haj pilgrims being seen off blocking the airport access.
Relly enjoyed Kuching again. It has a great relaxed vibe thanks to the river. Just find a place late in the afternoon with a cold drink and watch all the river activity. The path by the river is excellent and well kept.
