Bako NP - 2D1N - Trails selection and times optimization

I am going to spend 2D1N (Sat & Sunday) in Bako National Park when I visit Kuching next month.

We also loves to join the organized night hike in Bako. Our initial plan now is the get the earliest bus to Bako, hopefully we can reach there by mid morning, say 10am or latest 11am. Dump our luggage in the Park office if no early check-in then start exploring some of the trails. On our D2, our plan is to leave the park around 3.30pm so that we can catch the 4pm bus back to town.

Accommodation wise - already pre-booked to stay inside the park itself so that we can utilise every minute we have to explore the park ;oD

Trails selection: Tanjung Sapi, Telok Paku, Ulu Assam, Telok Delima as well as Telok Pandan Kecil and Telok Pandan Besar

Questions:

a) Assuming we will reach Bako around 10 to 11am, which trail should we select for Day 1 and Day 2 exploration respectively?

b) What time does the guided night hike starts and how do we go about with the registration? How long is this guided night hike?

c) Is it safe for ladies to walk back to HQ (depends on which trail we will choose on Day 1) say around 6pm? We could be quite near the HQ around this hour. Usually night fall is not early coz it gets dark 6++ or 7pm

Thanks!

It is as safe for ladies as it is for men. Make sure you have a torch or 2.

If you do arrive by 11am - by the time you check in and get sorted it will be close to noon.

Tanjung Sapi, Telok Paku, Ulu Assam, Telok Delima – are short walks taking the longest taking 90 minutes return

Lintang is a loop trail and very enjoyable. About 4 hours easy walking.

Don’t miss the water falls.

Night Walk - you can wander around after dark on your own with a torch - if you are slow and quiet, you will probably notice more than on the guided walk.

Think night walk starts at 8pm and you can just book when you arrive on the day. Its really nothing special however and you might end up trailing along with 20-30 other people at times. It last around 45 mins. Actually, its not a hike just an easy stroll along one of the boardwalks. I'd probably still give it a go however, you might get lucky and have a guide who spots something you would never have found.

If you do catch the earliest bus you should get to Bako around 9am or so, as the bus leaves Kuching at 7am.

Agree Lintang is good and quite varied. Dont overlook the beach immediately in front of the HQ and mangroves at the far end of it as well. Sometimes a good spot for seeing monkeys such as the Silver Leaf.

We are women and felt safe, no issues.

Yes, definitely bring torches - useful for the night guided walk as well as walking around after nightfall. Just be mindful that as compared to the Peninsular, it gets dark earlier in East Malaysia ... sunset starts at about 6:40 pm (and it becomes dark sooner under the forest canopy). Remember to pen down which trails you are going for each day at the Park HQ counter - they have a logbook for guests.

We went last year - the guided night jungle walk was along a portion of Ulu Assam trail and then, back the same way (we did it twice). It lasted for about 1.5 hours. You just need to show up and register at the Park HQ's counter right before 8 pm (RM10 fee per person).

If you have a chance, do check out the light show by the fireflies that congregate on the mangrove trees along the plank walk near the jetty at night.

Wow, you guys are great!

I have more questions below, and it might be too detailed ;oD

a) My plan for 2D1N trip will be as followed - doable?

Day 1 - Depends on our arrival time we will cover Lintang, Tanjung Sapi & Teluk Delima trails while there is day light then night walk. Might catch sunset on the beach.

Day 2 - Early in the morning to Teluk Pandan Besar + Pandan Kecil, view sea stacks

Note: Will slot in the beach in front of HQ and mangrove either Day 1 or Day 2. Is there any special timing that we have to be aware in order to catch any great views?

b) In case we didn't get on the earliest available bus, what other mode of transport that can get us to Bako NP and estimated cost?

c) How do we arrange for boat to view sea stack since we plan to stay 2N1N? Depart from Teluk Pandan Besar or Pandan Kecil? How much we can negotiate? Good time to view sea stack i.e. we do not wants to end up the pics in dark color or over-exposed with too strong sunlight? Any contact numbers to call so that we can reach the boatman to pick in case?

d) Typical time the communal canteen will open for breakfast and dinner?

e) Can we pay per person for the boat trip if we share with others since we stay 2D1N?

A) yes it is doable - given enough time.

B) Taxi or (private) mini van - rm50 one way. There are other mini vans leaving from the open air market (by Electra House) - I think they charge rm5 but only leave when full. They are quite slow as they stop frequently.

C) Speak to the boat men who take you to park HQ. Tide times are a factor - you need to view at near high tide.

D) Open all day from about 6.30am to about 10pm / midnight - depends on how busy they are.

E) yes you can - if you share the boat the cost is split. Arrange a pick up time with the boatman.

Try and get a boat back the following day with the same people that you (hopefully) do the outward journey with. This will keep the cost at its lowest level.

Earliest bus is 7am (rapid kuching) and then every hour. Other than private transport, rapid kuching is probably quickest and is the cheapest (RM 3.50 one way per person) Its an air con bus and comfortable.

There are often boats hanging around the bay at Kecil beach, looking to take people back to the HQ. So you can either get one of these to take you past the sea stacks (which i have to say, are overrated IMO) or as said earlier arrange with your boatman that takes you to the park in the first place. Think I paid about RM30 from Kecil to park HQ. Again, if there are others on the beach when you wanna leave ask if they would like to share the cost if they are going back.

Canteen serving breakfast from 730 am.

If you want to eat the food whilst its hot, go as soon as they open for serving. They don't keep the food warm after its served and the fairly tasty food soon becomes very unappealing after an hour or two sitting around! You can also order fresh things such as burgers, if you dont want the food in the buffet containers.

The sea stacks are just off Kecil. One price on way back to hq.

Take bus from various stops in town, should start from bus station nr pink mosque. Also stops at end of waterfront next to khatalistiwa cafe.

This might be a hit or miss depends on luck; where is the nice area to view sunrise or sunset?
