Things to pack for a trip to Malaysia

Hi,

We are travelling to Malaysia for the first time in November. We have 3 nights in Kuala Lumpur (touring round city sites), 6 nights in Kuching (trekking in Bako, orangutans etc) and 8 nights in Langkawi (mostly relaxation with a bit of site seeing thrown in). I just wondered if there are any things that people can advise us to pack for our trip. We have only done package holidays before and never been to the Far East so there may be things we could forget or not think about taking with us. i.e we have been told to expect downpours at that time of year especially in Borneo so to pack waterproofs.

Thanks for your help in advance

Bex - it really depends on what you are going to Bako for.

If you just want to hike some trails - then depending on your fitness and which trails you pick, you could do just a day trip. You could certainly do the Lintang and another shorter trek (if you're up to it and well prepared), or two short trails in one day trip. Shorts are absolutely fine for trekking here.

If you especially want to see specific wildlife (proboscis monkeys) you may want to stay overnight - but of course it depends on your schedule too. We had an overnight trip to Bako just recently - one specific 'must see' was the proboscis monkeys and we weren't in the right place at the right time until the next morning. If we had only done a day trip, we would have missed them.
