Seat Pitch Changes with Monarch

We returned from Male last week with Monarch.

During the second week of our holiday , we received a communication from our tour operator to tell us that the flight would not be returning directly to Manchester, but would be calling at Gatwick first to drop off passengers. They said this was due to scheduling. Many people were cross and unhappy that arrangements could be changed at short notice.

We had to contact our taxi provider to request a pick up two hours later. He said that we were lucky. Usually Monarch don't bother to inform their customer of changes!! Some people had to look for a hotel room for the night. The additional costs were unreasonable.

We found economy class on the flight extremely tight and very uncomfortable. I had restless leg syndrome and couldn't get out of my seat due to the person next to me being asleep. I have to say that the 29" seat pitch must be a health and safety issue.

On checking the Monarch website yesterday I was not suprised to see that Monarch are increasing seat pitch to 31", same as British Airways. Following our experience I'm sure that they have been inundated with complaints.

ABOUT TIME TOO MONARCH - DISGRACEFUL!!!

I have to agree with the comments about Monarch. Having just returned from Faro, I am glad our flight was only 2.5 hours.

Having to pay an extra £5 per person each way (advance booking) to ensure you are sitting with your family is atrocious - as I feel this is a basic requirement, it is a crafty way of making the fares appear cheaper.

The Monarch economy seat pitch is appaling. At 5'4" my knees were not quite touching the seat in front, however once the passenger in front had reclined their seat it was not possible to stand upright to get out to go to the toilet. - so avoid if you are tall, unsteady on your feet or if you are going long haul. (extra legroom seats are £15 or 25euro each)

- If you are travelling Monarch - PLEASE have the courtesy of not reclining your seat if there is someone sat behind you - it is extremely unpleasant.

The cabin service was fairly good, and the airline food reasonable.

We also had problems with flight delays. Unscheduled maintenance meant a 3 hour delay. We were given a voucher for light refreshment which consisted of the most pathetic sandwich (ham or cheese on heavily buttered, stale cheap white bread) and a small soft drink - Monarch you should be ashamed of yourselves.

On board we were not offered as much as a complimentary drink of water - considering we could not take any water through security, the exorbitant prices at the airport and on board, and a 3 hour delay - I thought this was appalling.

- needless to say I won't be choosing to fly monarch again in a hurry.

It would take a million reasons more than two inches to ever make us fly Monarch again....everything else they do is still rubbish and of course there is always the comment to remind us all from one of their chief execs,on here actually....."what do you expect for a cheap flight,if you want better pay for a dearer airline" I'm sorry but we paid several thousand pounds for our holiday....not what I would call cheap and not what I would expect some cretin whom is ultimately being paid by me to demeen with a comment like that....he could always work for Ratners I guess !!

Aint that just always the way?

Last year we had to return to Male by boat due to bad weather. We were on the 2.30am Emirates flight but others were on the 4pm Monarch. They were told by Monarch that the flight was waiting for them ,only to find when we arrived that it had gone !!!

No idea where those guys stayed after a 3 hour boat trip in rough seas.

Up until the end of last year the Monarch flight always seemed to start at Manchester and go via Gatwick to Male .Still it seems they can do what they like due to a captive market, but for how long????

Hi cfc...

never a truer word was spoken...the only only reason they get any business is because Thomas Cook MAKE you fly with them...sister airline, "oh you can't change to another airline before you book" "oh look now you have booked there are no other flights available" yeah right ! Thats why we would never touch Thomas Cook with an extremely long barge pole also....they are both as bad at service as each other so don't get me started on them...Thank God for Qatar and Emirates

Interesting facts and info.....

I think it wise to always choose your Travel Agent carefully with regard to which airlines they use - you might get your holiday for a few quid cheaper, but 20 hours is quite some time to and from the Maldives, and should certainly be a big considerationt viz. a vie. the whole package. Then you can avoid the horor of MONARCH..........

It is amazing how they stay in business - complaints a-plenty on this site, but then probably not enough made by the public in general.

I would not fly Monarch even if they offered a shuttle service between Heathrow and Gatwick ....... !!!!!!!!

Tiggy.

Emirates is the way to go as the stop over ,if only for a few hours in Dubai breaks your journey and allows for the stretch of ya legs.

New aircraft usually between the UK and Dubai.

Wise up the others eh?

The problem is 'most' Monarch flights are short haul, and this is no better or no worse than anybody else. They have 1 flight a week to the Maldives with 250 pax compared to the 1,000's it flies in and around Europe, so they basically take our comments with a pinch of salt, as most reviews short haul are OK. Basically as long as the Maldives flights are full nothing will change and unfortunatley if Monarch was the ONLY flight to Male we'd all us it and they like that. but thank god it isn't!!

The Maldives is a growing market, so lets hope the airlines start to take notice and treat us as customers not cattle!!
