Biyadhoo 1-14 December

Just booked this holiday and first time to the Maldives. Any tips , information etc would really be appreciated.... safe deposit boxes, airport taxes, excursions available, weather, what currency to take and rough costs - guess you know the sort of thing you would want/need to know about a new destination - anything really.... I am a swimmer but have never snorkelled or dived and my partner does not swim - except downwards! - very good at paddling though! Really after a relaxing beach holiday for 2 young at heart OAPs!

Hi Trisha

Biya is a great choice at the budget end of the Maldivian market. It is simple and basic but with a good atmosphere and reef. The rooms are desperately in need of a refurb (think greek self catering accommodation but without the kitchenette) and the food on offer is simple and limited in choice but good (and the chefs are always willing to help out with requests if they can). There are no safes/deposit boxes in the rooms but there are safety deposit boxes in reception for use at no extra cost. Currency is US dollars - see the faqs on the right about tipping. It is best to take some small denomination bills for luggage boys etc so get a range of bills. Not sure if you are staying on AI basis or not but anything outside your board basis eg trips, spa, drinks if you are on FB basis, will be charged to your room and will attract 10% service charge and 6%GST. You will be asked to sign for drinks/trips etc on a daily basis but will not have to settle your bill until the last night. If you want to check midway through to see how much you have spent just go to reception and get a printout.

Trips vary - perhaps the best is the dolphin safari. You will also be able to visit a local island, maybe visit Male or do a bit of fishing. There is a list with prices here - these were correct at March 2011 but the GST has now increased from 3.5% to 6%.

If you plan to snorkel you would be best taking your own equipment. You can get advice from a local dive shop on getting a properly fitting mask as there is nothing worse or offputting than snorkelling with an ill fitting, leaky mask. There can be some currents around most islands so be guided by the dive centre if in doubt when or where is best to try and fins will give you more power in the water to deal with any currents. On the west side of the island is the most extensive area of beach and also the lagoon - you can always see fish in the shallows so your partner will be fine.

December is the transitional period between the monsoon periods and the weather can be unsettled. You ought to be prepared for a mixture of sunshine and rain - it will not however be cold! There are further faqs about the weather on the right.

There are pelnty of sunbeds but they have no mattresses/padding - many people take a lilo for comfort - we don't bother. Beach towels and room towels are provided so no need to take up your luggage allowance with these.

Enjoy.

Just to add to Heather's excellent info., it's worth taking with you absolutely all toiletries, sun lotion, etc. that you will need, and a basic first aid kit (include a dry antiseptic spray in case of cuts/grazes) as there is only a very limited range of things available in the shop and what they do have is very expensive.

I'm sure you will love Biyadhoo for your first visit to the Maldives, hope you have a fabulous time.

What's the light like in the Biya rooms? Can you read at night or is it all low lit and romantic/sleep inducing?

Yes you can read at night, by the light cast from some rather ancient bedside lamps. The rooms are generally dark being amongst foliage. I thought the upper floor westside rooms were marginally lighter and more airy but still have a personal preference for downstairs block 1 rooms.
