Money exchange

Staying at Long Beach Hotel, Belle Mare and wondered the best thing to do about changing money. Was going to take a very small amount of MUR with me but should I change at airport on arrival or wait until reach hotel? Is there somewhere to change money near to the hotel?

Hi Lindy,

Best thing is to change sterling into MURs at one of the booths in airport arrivals as you get a better rate for your money than you get in the UK or hotel.

There are places to exchange cash at Belle Mare village near you - but best to get a taxi which will take less than five minutes:)

Thanks for info. I have been told by a travel agent that I cannot take MURs into the country, is this correct?? I was planning on just taking £20 worth to tide us over until we change money.

The travel agent is incorrect. Many people change money in their home country before travelling. We usually have money left over from previous trips which we take with us, too.

No need to change money before you go, though, as you can do it at the airport in arrivals, as mentioned by Bronia.

To echo Dee - your travel agent is talking rubbish.

I often come home with MUR and take them back with me.

But do change in arrivals - absolutely no need to change in the UK before you go at a poorer exchange rate than what you'll get in Mauritius.

Hi, you can not miss the currency exchange stands, they shout as you go by immediately out of the baggage claim area. Two days ago it was 49.24to the pound.

Well that rate passed me by and I get daily alerts on the exchange rate here - are you sure that was the buying rate and not the selling rate as the buying rate's been around 45-46.9 for the past two months?

I cant recall the last time it hit 49.

Maz the rate is 46.25 today - not good.

It has been volatile though the past 10 weeks so let's hope it goes up for you!

Well we can hope Bron, we both remember the good old days when our GPB went a lot further.
