Silver Beach v Hotel Ambre

Hi, I'm thinking of booking one of these hotels for late March 07 for 14 nights. Both have quiet good reviews.

Are you just paying a little more for Hotel Amdre due to the spa? Me and my husband are not that bothered with that kind of thing.

We are both early forties and have been to quiet a few different Caribbean islands and Phuket and this year Maldives, which was great. We have always fancied Mauitius and have decided to go next year.

We like good food and drink, good service, calm seas, (very important) good snorkling off the beach, a little evening entertainment and good trips.

Could anyone who has visited or seen these hotels give us any advice to which would be the best for us.

Hi Holidaysareus,

I had the same problem myself. But my husband finally decided to book the Hotel Ambre simply because it has more facilities, more restaurants, bars, a bigger pool etc. We are due to fly out to Mauritius on 10 July this year, so I will write a full report when I return and let you know what we think.

Went to Silver Beach in May 2000, hotel and rooms quite basic but could not fault their attention to detail, cleanliness, customer service etc. On A/I basis, will never forget the first time my husband went to bar and asked for a glass of wine and was told 'You can't have a glass, only a bottle!!!' Can't fault that can you? Nor the friendliness of the staff. Hotel ran daily complimentary trips to nearby Isle Aux Serfs, which was a most photogenic place, if not somewhat commercialised. To sum up, if you are watching your budget but want somewhere decent to stay, the Silver Beach, Mauritius cannot be faulted.

Hi,

Just returned from Hotel Ambre (trip review posted) and had a great time. We were there from 10-25 July and could not really fault the hotel. (we are also in our 40's) We did pass the Silver Beach and it looked very small - the Hotel Ambre is much bigger and has more facilities, more bars, restaurants etc. But as I did not stay at the Silver Beach - I could not really give proper comments about the differences. The service at the Ambre was good and the staff very friendly. Good trips - we did about 4 and all were very good. Entertainment isn't brilliant, but I guess it depends on what you like - it was ok if you like local shows. There is a gym and the spa, but we didn't bother to use them! There are 2 or 3 a la carte restaurants, again we didn't bother as the buffet restaurant was very good.

I can recommend the Ambre most highly. The beach is very nice and there is a reef a little way out from the hotel and you can hear and see the waves crashing into the reef, but the reef ensures that the sea in the bay is extremely calm.

As far as your other questions are concerned, the east side of the island definitely has the best beaches, but it was windy where we were there. My husband is very keen on snorkelling and was very disappointed with the snorkelling this side of the island. He did do the undersea walk - which you can buy just on the beach by the Hotel Ambre, about £18 and very good. We did do a trip (booked with Cathay Tours) on a speedboat to swim with wild dolphins which was the highlight of the whole holiday for him. We were taken by taxi to the west side of the island and boarded the speed boat, swam with the wild dolphins and then was taken to a couple of very good places for snorkelling. Had a lovely lobster lunch at a pretty island and then a couple more snorkelling places and then back. We had a great time. There were about 3 or 4 different pods of dolphins with between 6 to 8 in each pod. It was an unforgettable experience.

We also did the 'tea run' tour and the north tour which includes Grand Baie and Port Louis - both very good. We had booked another catamaran tour to Isle aux Cerf but this was cancelled due to bad weather - hopefully you won't have this problem when you go. Other people we know said that the island was well worth going to on your own.

Anyway, I hope this is helpful and I am sure wherever you book, you will have a lovely time.

Hello Gina!

We are choosing between Ambre or Le coco beach, Iv'e read that there are an dressing code in Ambre.

What do they mean by that?

Do you know if the All Inclusive is good in Ambre?

Wich one can you recomend, we are 24-25 years old and dont have any children?

We would be very grateful for your answers..
