Travel between San Jose Costa Rica to Boca del Toro, Panama

We are planning to travel from Parque Manuel Antonio to Boca del Toro Panama and would like to know the best way to get there by land. This would be in mid August 2010.

I know you said by land but heading back to San Jose and flying to Bocas on Nature Air is definitely the fastest and easiest way to go.

By land you can carry on down the coast past Uvita to Palmar Norte - you would have to check if a bus runs that way... then you are back on the Interamericana and can get a bus to the border at Paso Canoas. Cross and get a bus to David. Change buses and head to Almirante and then take the water taxi. It would be impossible to do this in a day.

The other route is to head overland to Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side via Limon. Then you head down to Sixaola and walk across the border, bus or taxi to Almirante for the water taxi to Bocas. Again, couldn't be done in a day.

Cheers,

Andrew

Thank-you Andrew. We have changed our plans and have decided to take the TICA bus from San Jose to Panama arriving at 3pm the next day in Panama City. We then would like to stay the night in Panama City ( any suggestions would be great! B and B's?? Then flying to the Archepagios, Contadora?? Would you recommend this issland and where to stay. We are 50 year old women who are old friends and want to see beautiful beaches and relax, swim, see the turtles and Marine life... on and on! Any suggestions would be so great! Thank-you!

Andrew, "Imposible" is such a definitive word. I have personally made it from Dominical to Bocas in a day on a surfing adventure with no problem. The key is planning and early departure...with a little luck added to the recipe.Marshal believe me, U don't want to miss the " Bocas Experience".

I agree you should do Bocas. If you don't want to fly from San Jose to Bocas, I would suggest going to Puerto Viejo for a couple days. This is a very different part of Costa Rica and well worth a visit. From there it is about 4 hour adventure crossing over the border and on to Bocas. It is a fun day if you have the right frame of mind. Plus it is rather easy because you can book the crossing in PV for about $35 to get you all the way to Bocas.

Hello, I was wondering what the deal with the last part of your post was..."Plus it is rather easy because you can book the crossing in PV for about $35 to get you all the way to Bocas" Who did you go through to book your crossing, I am traveling alone meeting people in Bocas and think I would rather have someone take me and spend a little more money...any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

From PC to Bocas you have 3 options:

fly via aeroperlas or Air panama, two flights/day each one in the morning and one mid-afternoon.

You can take an overnight bus at 8pm which gets you in Almirante around 6am - from there you take a water taxi.

You can take day time buses, and in which I would advise to overnight somewhere along the way - the road is scenic enough to warrant doing it during the day time.

amanz are you coming from Panama City(PC) or Puerto Viejo (PV)?

From PV there is a company Caribe Shuttle, http://www.bocasshuttle.com/, that will pick you up at your hotel in PV and walk you though the process. Much easier that way, plus we meet some great new friends that did the journey with us.
