Hotel Rex Chitre,Panama warning!

I stayed at the hotel rex the other night and it was a nightmare! We had our room changed twice due to somebody watching a television that could be heard on the entire first floor and also the shower head was broken and the water shot out like a bullet. The drain on the shower floor was broken and metal sharp was sticking up which could slice your foot open. The room was worn out, dirty looking and in disrepair.

Towels are cheap and toilet seats have worn out paint on them.

Then the kicker, the included breakfast the next morning was another nightmare, i was eating the 2 eggs and toast they give you and while I was eating the buttered toast it tasted sour,so my friend looked at the butter wrapper and it was from 2006, yes 2006! I complained to the front desk girl and she gave me some broken english excuse that it was not their fault. You are not safe in this place and they do not care one bit about your stay there. Stay out of this place and read my next story about the clothing store next to the hotel rex.

I was buying a bathing suit for my friend next store to the hotel rex and the purchase was about $15.00, after paying for the suit,my friend tried it on and found it did not fit right. the store owner said we cannot give your money back, I said are you crazy if it does not fit and I have given you back your merchandise you cannot keep my money, this whole issue was withing 10 minutes time from purchase.

Finally after searching this place for another 20 minutes we found another suit and left this place as fast as possible.

I have never seen people like this in my life!

There is really nothing to see in this town if you can get out with your life and money and not physically ill!

Most places won´t let you try swimsuits, because they´re personal items, just like underwear. In general, most countries are not like the U.S., where you can return just about anything to the store for any reason.

Well I hate to tell you , but the employees in the store handed my friend about 10 suits to try on and then put them right back on the racks, and let me be more specific bikinis. Also the store manager as she appeared said the reason was she could not take the money from the register, nothing about once it is worn. These people could care less who wore the suit before! Happy shopping in chitre!

Not to be a smartass but:

First customer service is not high on the list of most Panamanian establishments, sure there are some but at best usually customer service means indifference. Panamanians don't seem to mind, it is the way it has always been, it bothers the hell out of gringos however.

Second you review of the hotel may be right on but then I bet you paid around $25/night, look on the bright side, you had water ,decent water pressure and the drain worked.

Most smaller Panamanian hotels have tile floors in the hall and the rooms so noise is always a problem ear plugs are a good idea.

The swimsuit thing I don't know, a little like trying on underwear and then returning it, for $15 not a bad buy even if it didn't fit.

Also complaining about the fron desk girl giveing you a broken english response, not sure if your beef is with her response or that she could not speak english, look if you really want to complain to Panamanians about stuff you need to learn their language.

Sorry but your post reads like the spoiled gringo tourist who pays very little, cant speak the language and then complains about how he is treated.

I write this not so much to pisss you off but to put travel to the smaller towns n Panama in perspective for others, you have to have the right attitude, speak a little spanish and don't expect much in the way of customer service.

Sir, obviously your standards for a simple basic level of lodging have fallen below that of a normal human being.

I do speak some spanish and my panamanian girlfriend was with me ,the point of my rermark of the broken english response is that the front desk girl was a complete jerk and the owner! the hotel rex advertises they speak english on the internet another lie!

Why gringoes like you have lowered their levels of self respect I have no idea,or maybe you dont know anybetter,I dont know. But people like you who support this type of level of neglect and lack of service do no justice for the industry.

I have been to this hotel rex before and it is deteriorating very badly. You suggest accepting rancid ,possibly poison food? I am hoping many people see these responses as to warn them to stay away from this place,i enjoy when people do the same for me. As for you , Ill leave the back door open for you sleep with the dog.

I am sure with your atitude you must be a great joy to deal with as a guest.

Look if you want customer good customer service stay at the Marriott in Panama City, I stay there frequently and if I don't get the service I expect I let them know, in a nice way.

If you are a frequent traveler to Panama like you claim to be then you know about the lack of customer service at most establishments, it is just not a skill that is taught. However if you understand and travel through the country trying to impose your standards good luck! You are coming off as the obnoxious gringo(I am not sure where you are from)

Also you say you are with your Panamanian girlfriend,

let me just take a wild guess here, you are an older gringo and she is about 20 years younger(sorry if I am wrong about this). If that is the case you are going to get a few more problems especially from middle aged Panamanian women, they are not going to say anything direct but don't expect a smile and a lot of help.

Remember you are a guest in their country, my philosophy has always been to roll with the pucnches and make the best out of difficult situations, I want the locals to think Americans are curteous and generous, makes my travels a lot easier(10 trips a year to Panama) you on the other hand are giving us a bad name.

Sir, I dont know how many punches you have taken as you describe but they have definately taken their toll on you. I dont know anything about you nor do I care but I feel very sorry for you. There is a serious problem in panama with service and they need to be taught and understand what they cant get away with. Most of them do respond and correct the situation but it a problem in the culture. I am a lot more involved in panama than you are,not just a hotel visitor. and you talk about the women middle aged with problems with my 20 year younger girlfriend, hahahaha you are a sad case, however as I said I really dont care. You are the embarrasment to americans allowing people to walk all over you. In any event, the hotel rex will learn from the many posts I am putting on the internet they cant feed humans garbage! nuff said.

You are a nut job dude. You are on a misson to blast some poor cheap hotel in Panama becuase it did not live up to your level. I almost question if your posts are for real, are you actually a 12 year old kid getting your jollies out of this?

You have 4 posts, you list where you are from as Panama, yet you speak limited spanish, you are a troll only coming on this forum to rant and rave, just look back to your first response to Tupapi's post.

Please go home to wherever you are from, Panama will be much better for it.

Next time you're in that area, try Hotel La Villa in Los Santos: Very near to Chitré, and an excellent place to stay. It also has a pool, it's very quiet, and is only a few dollars more than the Rex.

Also, use this forum to ask before you book. The Rex is low-budget lodging. Might be OK for the backpacker crowd, but I wouldn't stay there.

As far as your shopping experience: Sad to say, that is what you'll find in much of Panama (and most of Latin America is not much better). The bigger stores in PC *tend* to be more enlightened about service, returns, exchanges, etc., but they're still a long, long ways from the US or Canadian experience.

My favorite story about customer service (which I think came from Russia, but it applies here): When McDonald's sent a US-based expert to teach employees at a new foreign store about the importance of customer service, one of the new recruits asked, "Why do we have to be nice to them? We're the ones who have the hamburgers."

"I had a cell phone here which the service was lousy and I changed to a competitor as there are several cell phone carriers in panama now and They did not want to cancel my contract due to the dropped calls etc,so I raised my voice in front of everybody as well panamanians said I should do this next to me and wella they cancelled my contract in writing. "

Really? In the U.S. you could NEVER get a cell phone company to cancel your contract, and if you "raised your voice", they would call the cops and you would end up in jail. So I guess there are some things that are better in Panama. I agree with Exilio. Find out about the place BEFORE you go. If I enter a hotel room and look around and find it not up to my standards, I walk out. Would you expect a hotel manager to speak in French to a French tourist in a cheap hotel in say "Nowhere" Texas? I see that you also posted the same message in travelpod (www.travelpod.com/forums/index.php…), which you also just joined for the first time to post this message. Anything good to say?

I think you should stick to the all inclusives or Disney, with your umbrella drink, etc.
