going to colon by Ship. The quote of $35 for taxi. Is that in US dollars??

Are there admission fees for the zoo and other venues?

Panama uses the U.S. dollar (plus some coins of its own) for its national currency. However, instead of dollar, it's called "Balboa."

As for taxi fares, it all depends on where you want to go. $35 will probably only get you to the zoo, which is in Soberanía National Park, on the other side of the isthmus, close to Panama City. The fare, to and from, will likely be $70 per person. Negotiate the round trip before going, and make sure it also includes Miraflores.

And, yes, there are admission costs for the zoo, for the Gatun locks visitors' center and for Miraflores locks visitors' center. I believe the zoo is $5 per person, Miralfores is $8 and I think Gatun is either $5 or $8.

When you get to Colon, look for the green SET taxis (Servicio Especial de Turismo). The drivers speak English and most have a fairly decent knowledge of the history of the area. (What they don't know, they will happily make up.) Tell the driver where you want to go, for how long and negotiate the price. The more people with you, the cheaper it will be per person.

Along with the zoo and Miraflores locks visitors' center (with a very good museum) on the Pacific side, there are a number of places to visit on the Caribbean side; hitoric Portobelo, Gatun Locks and Fort San Lorenzo.
