Diving near Royal Decameron, Puerta Vallarta

My husband and I are going to the Royal Decameron at the end of October but are struggling to find out about diving there. Has anyone dived from there recently and if so, how was it and which dive company did you go with?

There most likely is no diving there. The only real diving you can find on the Pacific coast is in Isla Coiba.

There is no diving along that area of the Pacific. There is nothing to see and absolutely no viz.

If you are experienced divers and used to deep dives and comfortable with strong currents, surge, thermoclines and "blue water diving" you might consider going to Coiba. The dive shops offer 2,3 and 4 day dive packages overnighting on the island. Also, add a day for travel to and from Sta. Catalina on each end.

If you prefer warm water diving, go to Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side. Portobelo also offers diving at limited sites. That would be about 3 1/2 hours from the Decameron by car.

Manuel, you cannot have people contact you so you can promote your tour company... If you have valid travel advice, please share it here. If you want to promote your tour company try advertising somewhere. For the 100th time this is not somewhere to push your company.

Hi Marlon definitely the Caribbean option is better compare with the Pacific in this time of the year. However you have some pacific Island like Coiba, Isla Iguana (Pedasi), Otoque and Bona (Panama) some others that may be can work always you don't have rain, storms or big swells conditions. Also Farallon Island just in front of Decameron resort in Panama can work, always you can check the visibility before and previous of the payment of your scuba diving excursion. For your idea the visibility in Farallon Island is good just 50 days of 365 days of the year. Good luck!

There is a dive shop, Pedasi Sports Club, at the tip of the Azuero peninsula. But, that is still hours away from the Decameron. I have friends who dove Isla Iguana with them and were sorely disappointed with the dive site and extremely poor visibility.

But, Isla Farallon? Check the viz before you pay? You can't be serious, Manuel.

Hi Marlon, in any of the resorts that you will decide to stay in playa blanca, definitely you don't have a big scuba shop.. you have some water sport center where they have a dive master with full equipment (including compressor) to go to make scuba diving to Farallon Island always the visibility will be enough. Farallon Island have two different caves where you can cruise from one side to the other side, repeat, with good visibility and ocean conditions. Is will be not the more amazing scuba in Panama, but hoping that I try to offer an answer for your question of close scuba diving option in Decameron. Always you have options to drive to Pedasi isla iguana or the Caribbean in case that you need better scuba conditions.

If15' max viz is enough for you, and you like looking at rocks and sand, go for it. Beware of the gear, though. There are no PADI or SSI certified dive shops anywhere close to the Decameron. Over the years, I have dove with five PADI or SSI dive operators in Panama. Only one has well maintained equipment -- Bocas Water Sports in Bocas del Toro.

Mr. Marlow, in case that you will decide make your diving close your Resort in Playa Blanca area, don't take care about the PADI certification of the dive master staff part of the water sport center located there. Don't forget that 5 starts hotels like Riu,Sheraton, Decameron, and others located there have operation in different countries, and they don't put in risk (liability) their clients. Always, you will can certified is there, they have PADI dive master staff or not. Don't forget ask about the caves located at Farallon Island, where you can cruise during the high tide. Always don't forget to check visibility before take the decision to go or not. Also don't forget that the best visibility for Scuba diving in Panama are located at the Caribbean side.
