Pasig River ferry service P94M in the red, COA finds

The reason that the Pasig Ferry has stopped operating is due to a massive loss found by the Commision on Audit.

When I travelled on this ferry in recent times, it was actually reliable - almost to the minute - and was well patronised with more than 100 passengers on at any one time and passengers boarding and disembarking contantly.

There are not many public transport operations (rail, ferry, bus or other modes) around the world that make a profit.

As a developing country, Philippines needs to invest in this sort of infrastructure. The Pasig River (at least to a layman's eyes) seems a lot cleaner than 15 or 20 years ago, which is probably the result of a gradual extension of sewers.

Although the article doesn't say so, let's hope that the ferry resumes soon (although I won't be holding my breath).

With its privatisation of water, Philippines has shown that it can improve basic services to its fast growing populace.

It would have been a much better service with 18 x 50 seat ferries rather than the 6 x 150seat ferries that were supplied.

Maybe it will operate again but no timescale is given.

The problem with subsidies is that everyone gets it instead of those who need it. Because of the subsidy on the MRT/LRT, twice as many people travel on it than it was designed to take and the fares are now less than aircon buses.

The additional passengers carried cause more wear and tear on the system causing it to wear out faster than was intended

Buses and Jeepneys make a good operating profit but all other transport is subsidised.
