Train from Vladimir to Irkutsk, are you sure? This is gross even by Russian standards. Consider flying instead?

The self-safety measures are the same as in other place on Earth.

-stay focused, have your eyes open

- keep an eye on your pocket and belongings

- stay in a decent hotel

- do not have tons of cash in your pockets.....

etc....... staff like that

The train from moscow to Irkstuk take about 3 nights. Thought this is what travellers do to enjoy trans-siberian experience :)

++++++++++++++++

I find hardly ANYTHING enjoyable in Russian trains. Domestic flights are also bad, but at least they are quicker................

There is only one train which can be enjoyed:

High–speed train “Sapsan” Moscow – St. Petersburg

or "Nevskiy Express" (the same route)

I would not take the train you want

I do enjoy trains, all people are different. Go, and be positive - many people do Transsiberian and enjoy it!

Russian trains are in fact of a much better quality than their European "colleagues" (not comparing TGV and Sapsan for sure ! but speaking of a sleepers). You should follow few rules:

1. Only trains starting or arriving (not passing !!!!) Moscow are good !

2. Only trains having 0xx or 00x numbers are good (they are called "firmennye" (branded) trains) avoid any other by all means !!!

3. There are several classes SV (1st class: two beds both lower compartment, AC, shared toilet, no shower etc.), "Kupeinyi" (2d class: for beds (two lower and two upper, same facilities but could be a bit less clean, could be no AC), "Platzcartny" (3d class, no separate compartments, just beds upper and lower with small walls between but you can not close from others (!), no AC and rather dirty facilities), in some cases could be also sitting cars were you have in good case an aircraft-type sits in bad case just benches. Having said that if you are a solo traveler you will have to book either 1 or 2 class (unless you are looking for some thrills :))) and you have to buy the full compartment.
