Gay travel to Moscow/Russia

I will be traveling to Europe this coming September to several different countries and cities. We wanted to spend a few days in Moscow , but as 2 gay man in our late 40s and considering all the recent anti gay laws passed by the Russian gonverment ..does anybody know how bad it will be for us ? Will we be harassed ..is it worth it to go or to skip it ?

Thank you

"anti gay laws passed by the Russian gonverment " probably come from "reputable Westerm media". :) We have gays here. They have clubs, subculture, magazines etc. What is forbidden in this law is you going to school and advertise your preference. If you make sex on the street you will be harrased and posecuted, be it gay or strait... Kissing on the street - will look strange... Do not expect to be harrased here...

My partner and I just returned from a trip to St. Petersburg and Moscow. I was very concerned about the new law which, as I understand it, states that anyone even suspected of being gay (tourist or national) can be fined and arrested for up to 15 days. This law is targeting "activists", but it is still threatening, unfriendly, and makes a clear staement that gays are not welcome in this country. That being said, we stayed in rooms with one double bed and it didn't seem to raise eyebrows. Some hotel clerks were tongue-tied when trying to figure out what to call us and they assumed we were traveling on business. We were very consciously un-gay and we avoided any public displays of affection while traveling and felt relatively safe. The only time we felt unsafe was during some kind of Air Force Day in St. Petersburg when the streets were filled with drunken packs of airmen. This would have felt unsafe in any foreign country. (However, that was the day a gay activist was beaten up a little bit by thugs and then arrested in front of the Hermitage.) Two weeks in Russia was just about as much as we could handle. We were THRILLED to get to Stockholm, a city welcoming and friendly and just plain fabulous. In summation, if you go to Russia, just keep your sensors up and if you don't try to make a political statement, you should be fine. It was a bit stressful but worth it (for the Matisse paintings alone) and you will be glad to leave. We do not have plans to return to Russia anytime soon.

So, to summarize: you made up some "law" to be afraid of, spoiled your trip with your unjustified fear, nevertheless never felt discriminated or unsafe but still were glad to leave and don't have plans to return. Sorry to say but all this says more about you than about Russia.
