Yes, your friends can request an official invitation for your entire stay in Russia. Please note that after your friends submit all of the required documents, the local office of the Federal Migration Service will be processing their application for a private visa invitation up to 30 days. They will also have to pay a small fee and then mail you the original document. No fax copies are excepted by Russian Consulates. So, if they send by DHL, or UPS, it will cost an additional $30-$35.

As you can see, it is costly and time consuming to get an official invitation for a private visa. I think it is much easy and probably cheaper to buy visa support documents for a tourist visa for your entire stay covering both legs of your trip. It will be also much faster as electronic copies of tourist visa support documents are accepted. There are many companies offering visa support documents for a fee. You can read more in the FAQ section on this page.

Once you get your tourist visa, you are free to travel wherever you want inside Russia.
