Trips to St Catherines & Peterhof

We will be arriving in April for 4 nights, and are looking to visit Peterhof & St Catherines Palace. As there are only 2 of us we are looking at trying to get to the above places with the aid of a guide. How much per hour would the average guide cost? Is it worth booking in advance or waiting until we get to hotel inorder that we may be able to share with other people?

I have read that you may pick up English language tours from Gostiny Dvor. Has anyone used these & do they include an English language tour around the properties without having to queue up for tickets, or do they just drop you off & pick you up? How much do these trips cost?

Or are there any other organised trips we can go on to reach these with tickets included? As we don't want to wait in long queues if it can be avoided & would want an English language tour of the palaces.

In April the Peterhof fountains are still off (until May 9th) so there is no good reason to visit Peterhof. Park will be empty and wet.

As for the Catherine’s palace you can go there yourself pretty easy as it is off-season so no crowds.

Simply take a commuter train from Vitebsky railway station or bus from Moskovskaya metro station. Palace is open daily 10.00 – 16.00 except Tuesday and last Monday of each month.

Another possibility is to take a public tour from a kiosk near Gostinyj Dvor. There is one company providing such tours. It is called Eclectica-guide. English tours to Catherine’s palace are available every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 14.00. The tour lasts for 5 hours. The price is 1.800 rubles (52 US Dollars) per person. Entrance fee is included.

If you decide to take a private tour I would recommend visiting two palaces in one day – Catherine’s palace and Paul’s palace – they are located close to each other and show you two very different styles. Hourly fee of the guides can differ from 10 to 20 US Dollars per hour. The same with the cars. Entrance fee in Catherine’s palace is about 17 US Dollars per person.

If you decide to hire a private guide you better find one before you arrive at the internet. So you can discuss any other\r possible tours or ask more specific questions.

Enjoy your trip!

When I was in St Pete, we arranged all the tours thru our hotel concierge. You don't mention where you are staying, but if it's a major full service hotel they likely can hook you up. I doubt there will be big lines that time of year. As the previous poster states, you might visit Pavlovsk (Paul's palace) which is near the Catherine Palace, on the same day. Pavlovsk is chock full of exquisite art objects and is a more neoclassical style compared to Peterhof and Catherine, which are both baroque.
