ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre

Are all seats good in this theatre, or are there sections to avoid when watching a ballet?

Seats at the Mariinsky are very different. I would advise the central boxes of the dress circle - boxes 11 and 12 where 1st and 2 nd row are equally good, in boxes 8, 9, 10, 13, 14 - 1st row is much better than the 2nd one. All the rest boxes provide view only from the first row.

In the stalls due to small inclination view is reduced by any head in front of you.

Central boxes of the Ist tier are much less convenient with 3 row inserted in the same space - instead of the 2 rows in the boxes below, in the dress circle.

If you'll have a chance - take a seat at the Tsars' box!

My personal favorite for ballet is the Belle-Etage, either side, front row, closer to the stage. The stalls are 2-3 times as much as 1/2 to 1/3 as good a view. Those are the hardest to get since regular goers buy them first. When the tickets go on sale, about 60 days before the performance, get what you want as soon as possible. Waiting until later will offer fewer choices and probably will sell out.

The 1st Balcony Circle is also just as good on the rail row. For opera, I like the more balanced acoustic environment of the center Belle-Etage or 1st Balcony Circle. Even the 2nd Gallery Circle is good. You are further from the stage but the sound is better balanced in the center, towards the Tsar's Box..

If you are a couple and one is shorter, tandem seats, 1 on the rail and 1 seat directly in back are fine also but second row, or worse, 3rd row are only recommended for tall people.

The temporary Mariinsky Concert Hall is the perfect venue for orchestral music, there are no bad seats but the stalls front-of-orchestra, about center of row 12 are perfect, but that is relative since the worst might have better acoustics than the best in any other theater. According to international critics, it is the best acoustic space in the world currently for such music. Hopefully the new Mariinsky II which will replace it will be almost as good.
