Nightlife - fun things to do in St. Petersburg at night

Could anyone recommend any fun things to do during night time. Maybe something that locals like to do, something away from the tourist. Any specific clubs that you could recommend?

Thanks!

There are hundreds of clubs and activities and each that is popular because it caters to the interests and styles of those who go. So what sort of place or activity to like back home? What age group?

The most generic for meeting preferences for a wide range of people are the English pubs, about 200 of them and all seem to be popular. Frequently English is spoken.

One place that was popular with locals and expats closed a few months ago to be remodeled to be a Spanish pub is the old "Other Side" gastro cafe is not called Barcelona and has more seating now, less room for live music but on my first two visits, it was just as or more lively than before. In fact there were no seats or tables, and about 20 standing.

For music, there is really a wide variety but it is hit or miss, not many placed have live music every night except for some of the jazz clubs.. The best small authentic jazz club is JFC Jazz Club which is filled with real jazz fans so there is less socializing or even any talking during performances. It has very high standards in group booking, you will not hear a bad performance there regardless of the genre being featured the night you attend.

There are hundreds of small neighborhood DJ bars but without knowing your preferences it would be hard to give a recommendation. For a large stylish rock club with live music with real stage and high end sound system, Jagger Club is very nice, good food moderate drink prices. Get reservations if on Friday or Saturday.

Dance clubs are very personal in taste, everyone has their favorites but do not go to many others. The music type style or class of surroundings and age group would help in making a recommendation.

ALL the activities (except a few restaurants catering to tourists or folkloric productions) are intended for locals, no place could survive unless they had a good local following outside of the summer months. The better restaurants, clubs, bars etc do not even promote to tourists at all. So if is a place is lively and fun, you can assume that almost all attending will be locals because it has struck a cord with people who know hundreds of alternatives to go to if that one is not interesting.

Hi, my son ( 17 studying Russian ) are going to St Petersburg in August. We would like to see a show as well as everything else we have on our itinerary. Do you recommend any theatre in particular. We live in London and are lucky enough to see show often here, we do not want to see anything too touristy... somebody said the Russian Folklore show was fun, but it looks very touristy.

Anything else you can think of that is going to give us a real feel for Russia would be hugely appreciated..... i am a real fan of margarita and the master.

Being from London, the stage is something different to you than most visitors so I would suggest visiting one of he hundreds of small and mid sized drama theaters scattered all over the city. The city center will have the highest concentration of them so most will be within walking distance of a city center hotel or apartment. There are 330 theaters many with performances nightly.

One street that has become a restaurant street also has 4 theaters, pus several more within a block. It is Rubinsteiner Ul, that runs from Nevsky prospect to what is called 5 Corners because, naturally, 5 streets intersect . There dozens of restaurants of a wide variety of cuisines, all moderate priced.

One theater I visit often is names "Theater in Europe" 1 block from Nevsky pr. A number if the regular cast are friends of mine. Tickets are reasonable and performances are of a high quality.

The folkloric shows are featuring talented performers formally trained in dance and voice for classics but the shows are definitively intended for tourists and have very little to do with northwester Russia let alone St Petersburg. No one in the past probably every danced like that as part of folk culture.

There are too many authentic performances in ballet, opera, romances, jazz, rock, bard style, chamber, to choose from.

My suggestion would be to explore what you find and then come back after a few months or in the fall after he knows the city well and really get the advantage of his knowledge of the city.

Getting away from the tourist area is easy since most of the city's restaurants, clubs and performance venues are geared to locals and not tourists who come only 4 months of the year. Walk two blocks in any direction from Nevsky prospect and you will be in "real" St Petersburg. Hop on the Tube(Metro) and get off at any station and you will be in real St Petersburg.

Drop by a pub or meet up with your sons friends and you will get lots of suggestions based on what is available at the time you are there. Unless he is unusually shy he will have more local friends in a month than every in his life, it is a very social city with a great deal to do for young people
