Bottled water should not have any bacteria that you are used to or not. The city center has had lot of upgrades to the water distribution system and several years ago had a state of the art water treatment and monitoring complex go on line. Many restaurants, cafes, hotels, and rental apartments have filtration systems. The old warnings about water here are overly cautious particularly after all the upgrades. But, that said, some of the pipes in old hotels and neighborhoods are 150 years old so might have a mineral taste.

Bottled water is in both mineral water and plan water, and both types are either still or with gas. It is all required to pass tight health department standards so ignore the internet rumors and fear mongering. Usually the most fearful of warnings come from people who never got within 4,000 km of Russia.

Stanj, how can English speaking visitors tell the difference from bottled water with gas and no gas? We will be in Moscow next week and just want to buy regular water (no gas).

The still starts with HE.

If you can`t see a word starting with HE on the label it`s the wrong water. I was particular about this as I won`t drink gassy water. Someone at our table bought a huge bottle of gassy by mistake. After that they also shook the bottle as well.

Right you are: the still is usually marked as "НЕГАЗИРОВАННАЯ" ("not gassy") whereas the sparkling is "ГАЗИРОВАННАЯ" ("gassy").
