No-visa 72- hour St Petersburg travel

I understand that we can stay in St Petersburg for 72 hours with no visa if we take the ferry from Helsinki and their "tour" bus from the dock into town. Here's my question:

Do we have to take the ferry round trip? Would it be possible with no visa to arrive by ferry from Helsinki, but take the express train back to Helsinki 3 days later?

1. Yes.

2. No. You have to arrive and depart on a ferry to be eligible for a 72-hour visa free stay.

From June 1 (to be approved by the Russian parliament yet) you will also be able to stay up to 72 hours while transiting through some major Russian airports.

We did the trip in summer 2013. Drove from the UK to Helsinki, arrived on a Saturday and booked at the terminal (it was a lot cheaper than the local Helsinki tourist office).

Unfortunately the Russian end of the hotel booking system did not work weekends so we could only book an overnight ferry trip, one day in St P. and an overnight ferry trip back. We parked in the port car park.

The ferry was excellent.

When you arrive at St P. there's a stack of minibuses to take you to the city (free - part of the deal) but keep your eyes shut when moving if you are of a nervous disposition. A short walk to the Nevsky Prospekt and sit drinking a beer or two and watch the world go by.

We'll do it again but arrive in Helsinki on a weekday.

You can book a hotel in St.Petersburg in advance while in the UK - through booking or expedia or some other site...

We are taking the 72 hour Visa Free cruise on St. Peter Line, Helsinki to St Petersburg middle of May, 2014, has any one done this and do you have any suggestions.; We are going to use a tour guide we found on "toursbylocals.com" has anyone done that. We would like to have as much information as we can get.

Dozens if not hundreds have and posted their reports right here, all you need to do is read the FAQ on the right and, if that's not enough, search the forum for more.

> We are going to use a tour guide we found on "toursbylocals.com" has anyone done that

Toursbylocals is simply a web site where anyone and their cat can sign up and advertise themselves. If you type toursbylocals in the forum search box you will find many reports.

You have it right at your fingertips. Just don't expect all these people to flock back to the forum to re-post their experiences specifically for you - have some mercy on them.

We did this last summer. We were driving from the UK so didn't know when we'd get there so could not prebook. We went to the tourist office in Helsinki to get details. Could have booked there but went to see where we could park the car, so went to terminal, looked ok, went to port booking office, much cheaper. Unable to book hotel in St P as it was a weekend.

Booked an overnight ferry, a day in St P and overnight back. Parked the car in the port no problem and no problem with visit. Loved it but it was hot. Doing better this year and arriving on a weekday!

Hi,

I have a question about taking 2 one-way ferry tickets for the no visa tour. Do I have to hire tour guide additionally? I see there is requirement that I need a tour of the city from an official provider.

Thanks!

We bought round trip tickets (not sure what you mean by two one way tickets because you have to go and return on the ferry). You also have to buy shuttle tickets you can use to get into st. P and return and this constitutes your"tour"-

We happened to book a private tour because we thought it would be a good idea but there is no requirement to do that. We only took the shuttle back
