5 days in St Petersburg

We are two Aussies who will be visiting St Petersburg for 5 days in May 2014.

We so we don't want to visit every church, monument and palace in the region but would like to visit the must-sees, and get a taste of life in this beautiful part of Russia.

Any suggestions about where we should go or what we should do?

There's a lot said and written about the must-sees in this forum and in the guidebooks. Must-sees would be the Hermitage, Peterhof, Catherine Palace. To get the feel of the city walk on Nevsky prospect, or you can just choose a street coffee-shop and sit outside, watch people. Visit a local market, walk in the parks... relax and enjoy it :-)

I would say allow a couple of days for the suburbs. For instance, 1 day for Peterhoff and 1 day for Catherine's Palace and Pavlovsk. The rest is for you to visit the must-sees in the city. It has plenty to offer, depending on your own interests. The Hermitage can also be a whole day, but if you are not really into art, 2-3 hours might be enough. The St Isaac's and Savior on Spilled Blood are spectacular. You might also leave 1 day free to just walk around, do shopping, sit in cafes etc.

Enjoy your time in St Petersburg! You gonna love it :)

In case of good weather it worth to go to Peterhof by hydrofoil (at least one way trip). Don't forget about boat ride along rivers and canals. It's very enjoyable. There are some "group" boats with English speaking guides, this season tickets were 600 rub (about 20 US $). You can check the web http://anglotourismo.com. You always can take a small private boat at the price about 4500-5000 rub per hour. I also can suggest you to go to see drawbridges at night. Usually they start to draw bridges at about 1.00- 1.30 am (you shall check the exact schedule for the new season). It's unforgettable experience, more over it's something absolutely unique - something you can see only in St. Petersburg. You can do it yourself or you can book a tour ("white night tour").

Enjoy our city!
