St. Petersburg--first-time visitor, basic questions

Thinking of going to St. Petersburg. I know it is cold in February. Question: is it so cold that it makes touring and enjoying the city intolerable or can you still enjoy yourself? How many days would you suggest to get a good taste for the city? If we have a week, would you suggest some day trips? To where? Any good overnight trips, such as to Helsinki, or is that biting off too much?

Thanks

It can be anywhere between 0 and -20 celsius (convert that into fahrenheit for a homework :). If it's the former, you can safely spend hours outdoors if properly dressed, if it's the latter then you don't want to spend a lot of time outside but there's a lot to see inside (museums etc) and any "inside" in Russia is heated to kill in the winter.

A week is a good time to see the must-sees in the city proper and make a couple of day trips - the locals will tell you what's worth visiting in the winter and what's not (Peterhof with its fountains off comes to mind).

February is a good time for visiting museums - as it is not a period of holidays or vacations like now, in early January when all the museums around are heavily crowded with long lines (partly due to limited size of check rooms)
