Thinking of Moscow and St. Petersburg for next year

Hello

Would love to see Moscow and St. Petersburg for our next vacation. I'm looking at cruises and have found one that your stay in St. Petersburg is 1 1/2 days.

Any recommendations from travelers who have done this via cruise? Would also consider tour group. Not independent enough to go it on our own.

thanks

If you absolutely must go with a tour group then a cruise is not a bad way to see Moscow St Pete and everything in between. The only problem is in both cities the river cruise terminals are not conveniently located to the main tourist sites at all. At least in Moscow it is close to the subway.

We had booked a cruise but had issues with the distance from the ports to the cities and having to keep up with a group. We found we could stay in hotels in Moscow and SPB with a private car and guide for about the same cost as a cruise, especially if we opted for a better cabin. We're doing it this July so can't comment yet on how it works out, but will post a trip report.

Thanks for the information on the port locations. I'll look at group tours. We're more comfortable in a group.

There are cruises staying in SPB for 2-3 days. If you are more comfortable in a group the question is that how many people would you like to be with. The cruise groups have 30 pax and even more in a big bus. In my opinion the optimum is 8-10 people in a group. It is a good balance between reasonable price for the tour and the proper number of group mates.

Take a look at TJ Tours. They are highly rated on trip advisor. We are arriving on a cruise ship in August and will probably book a 2 day trip with them. Their maximum is 12 people for a group (do private too) and a very responsive, within 12 hours to your emails to them.

Thanks for the information. Was also going to look at a tour group - land based. Any suggestions? We've been on Globus and enjoyed it.

Visiting St Petersburg is really easy, and a group is not needed unless you just like the people you are touring with. Read past forums posts and how so many people who were apprehensive about going solo, ended up having a great time with no problems.

Booking a hotel or apartment is a matter of choice but apartments allow saving money and having more privacy, preparing some of your own meals and are frequently in very good locations. All the destinations and activities are accessible without assistance but some like Catherine Palace are better seen by joining a group tour for the 1/2 day.
