When and hoe long to visit St Petersburg

My family and I are considering a visit to St Petersburg. Is late September early October

a good time to visit? Also are 3 nights enough to get a feel for the city?

Late September might be not bad, with fall colors and few tourists.

Three nights is ok to start scratching the surface of the feel of the city.

just an idea, if you are going to Russia you can think of other destinations to include in your trip as well, eg. Moscow and for example Novgorod the Great which is not far from St. Petersburg

You are right, three nights is more than enough to cover St.Pete, Moscow and Novgorod. Why not throw in Kazan and Lake Baikal as well.

Justgorussia's self-promotion in this forum is disgusting.

Three days are not enough to see much unless you are very well prepared and those 3 days does not include travel days. I know cruise passengers see a lot in 2 days but those are highly organized replanned itineraries that no land based visitor would be able to duplicate. If you went on a normal tour, 5 days is pretty much the norm to see the major sights because they are less tightly planned, giving more free time and non-tour solo exploration time.

If you study the city before and plist your priorities, and figure out transportation to and from the suburban palace estates that are must-sees, it is certainly possible to cover a lot in 3 days. But if your pre-trip planning is not meticulous, and just show up with a general plan, you are not going to see or experience all you wanted.

When to visit? Late September is one of the best times of the year, weather is generally good, prices are going down in hotels, lines lessen to being hardly an issue, the major cultural performance theaters are getting back into full season and the city becomes more relaxed and a slower pace takes over in the city center. October last year was great but do not plan on great, warm dry weather. Winters have been milder than historic average for the last 5-6 years with one record breaking snow winter a few years ago so you might have very nice weather in October, with luck or the continued global warming having a big impact on what you encounter.
