Trans-Siberian Railway

Hi All

Just a few quick questions about the train journey.

Is it possible to travel in a double cabin alone with only paying for one? Do they get another single traveller in with you ?

Is it possible to do a two week journey , getting off 2 or 3 times (approx) to stay in hotel ?

I'm Irish , Is there good drinking done on the train ? Sessions ?

Finally, Is there any good travel agents about ? (Irish/English)

Thanks for any info or advise

If you buy one ticket (one bunk) - you get someone else. If you buy both bunks for yourself at double price - you travel alone. Pretty straitforward. :)

There are a lot of trains along the route. You can travel between them and make breaks - thats a good way to travel in Russia. Also, drinking in the train is better with someone you know, and meeting other peaople duting stops in cities. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk are really worth visining.

Restaurant-car on the train is much more expensive than getting a bottle from the shop, and not so much variety. Though, in Russia we say that only the first bottle of vodka is expensive :)

Nothing to say on travel agents.

Good luck!

Rule number one in Russia: don't drink with strangers... :)

Seriously, bad stuff happens from time to time with those who drinks along the way. People get drugged and deprived of their property. They turn lucky if their health does not suffer from those drugs mixed in vodka. Usually, crooks do not care much about using a safe dose of sleeping pills. Or alcohol-fuelled fights - I wouldn't advice to get into one.

First class is usually empty. Buy one seat (towards the end of the car) and you will be by yourself for SURE.
