Currency for Transmanchurian

Can anyone confirm what currency/currencies are used to buy food etc on the train? I've heard everything from USD to Roubles and Yuan?

Thought I'd answer my own question here having done the trip.

The resturant car is provided by a seperate and private company on the train so it changes at border crossings.

You need Yuan on the Chineseside and Roubles on the Russian side.

There aren't any currency exchange facillities on the train or at either side of the border crossing.

To be honest the food on the Chinese side was grim and expensive but edible. The Russian side; it gets really expensive for tiny portions and its awful food. Bring plent of boil up noodles, fruit, canned food etc. I found tuna tins, mayo and buns a good lunch. Boiling drinking water is available on the trains and at most stops you can hop off to buy more noodles if you haven;t bought them with you.

There is a bank at the station on the russian side but its in town and about 15 minutes walk from the station so make sure you can leave the train for plenty of time. The currency exchange facillity accepts yuan (most in Russia dont) but was closed for lunch when our train was there. Tey do however have an ATM which accepts some western cards.
