1st January 2010

Would like to know whether 1st jan. is a working day or a public holiday in guangzhou and whether on the day the wholesale markets would be open.

Are there any celebrations on new years eve in guangzhou like fireworks etc? if so what is the best place to visit with a family?

In China the new year is starting on February 14 2010. That will give rise to a lot of celebration.

1 Jan the New Year Day is a public holiday in China and the wholesale markets will be closed.

New Year is not celebrated as much as the Chinese New Year, as JPDeM mentioned. Fireworks only happens during that time.

January 1 is a holiday but most shops are open. Shopping is the national sport in China.

Just to clarify: during public holidays, wholesale markets are closed but retail shops are open.
