Asahikawa in itself isn't really a place to visit, apart from having the zoo in the city area. Also small Ainu collection and a Snow/Winter Mseum. There's a "ramen vilage" for tour buses there too. Oh...and a sake factory.

Also has a pretty busy nightlife at weekends - when all the farmers from the hinterland come into town for entertainment...big area of adult entertainment etc

But near (1-1.30 hrs) is:

Furano and Biei - farms, flowers, hikes

Asahidake and Tenninkyo - hot springs, cable car to fantastic view

Sounkyou - gorge and cable car to view

Daisetsu is huge - there are days and days of hiking to be done here. Or you can just go and go up the cable cars for a few hours.

JR runs a special Ltd. Exp. Asahiyama Zoo Train from Sapporo to Asahiyama Zoo in the summer. The train is decorated inside-out on an "animal theme", even has a playroom inside one of the compartments. It runs on weekends from June to October, but from late July to end of August, it runs every day.
