How thing going in Sapporo ? Is the street will be dead , are the choclate factory, mall, museum will be open ?

all very very happening!

New Year is a little quieter because Japanese people go home to their families and there are not so many public events...and many places are closed Dec 28 to Jan 4. Shops closed Dec 31 and Jan 1, 2.

Here's a re-post of what's open during New Years in Sapporo:

CLOSED (until Monday, January 7, 2008)

- most neighborhood shops

- schools

- most places of business


- all supermarkets and convenience stores

- retail shops, bars, restaurants and clubs in the Susukino nightlife district

- retail shops, bars, restaurants and clubs at JR Sapporo Station and other large railway stations

New Years is a quiet, family time in Japan. The city is quiet except for Susukino and the JR Sapporo railway station.


There are caroling events in December, as well as New Year's eve countdown parties. There is also the tradition of visiting the shrine on New Year's day, New Year's eve or the first week of the new year. A great time to see the kimonos out in force. For event information, try this online source:
