Minshuku for family of 4 in Sapporo

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a minshuku in Sapporo in August this year for a family of four (parents, 6 year old, 2 year old)?

Thanks!

Hi

Really "minshuku" are family run guest houses and usually in the countryside or small towns. Sapporo is a big city - so a little different.

But I reccommend

1) Nakamura Ryokan - which is between Sapporo Station and the Odori shopping area, 30 seconds from the Botanical Gardens.

It's a relatively new building, but decorated in Japanese style inside.

or

2) HOtel Maki - which is near Nakajima Park and 5 minutes walk from a streetcar stop. Modern building, but Japanese style inside. Inada family speaks a little English. Send them a fax in easy English on 011-531-6747. Good home cooking ;-))

or

3) Ino's Place - not central, a subway ride from the city center, but friendly people and they have a room that can be rented by a family.

Thanks for your reply, Amanda.

As you mentioned in your second recommendation 'Japanse style inside', do you happen to know any other hotels with Japanese style rooms?

Thanks again!

Hi there

well, hard to do because most hotels will have some Japanese rooms and some Western style rooms.

Generally in hotels the Japanese rooms are more expensive.

In Hokkaido there are more beds and carpets because it's a newer area of Japan and many small guest houses kit themselves out in faux German/French/British style.

In Japan the grades of hotels are

Hotel

Pension

Minshuku

Hostel

Pension and Minshuku are really private houses with rooms, many of which will be Japanese style.

Many hotels in sapporo will have tatami mats and futons.

Anita

Can you post this as a seperate posting - and ask a particular question?

Where are you going?

Why ? ski onsen eating shopping snow festival?

What kind of group are you? Young adults? couple? family group?

It's hard to give reply at the moment...maybe it's a good idea to read about Hokkaido on this website and others, or buy a guide book. Then come back with questions ;-)
