Hi

You are going from Sapporo for the day by train?

First when you arrive get to the Asaiichi - the Morning Market - it is just opposite the train station - lots of good eating places there....fish and veggies.

Then take the tram to the historical area with the old government buildings and museums.

Then if you have time, you can take the cable car or a bus up the mountain for a view of the city - OR you can go by tram to the Goryokaku Fort in the north of the city.

Hakodate is known for its fish - and specially the squid - Ika Meishi is squid stuffed with rice and boiled in soy sauce.

It's a long day out from Sapporo, but doable.

Hi Amanda:

Thanks for your helpful suggestions. We are doing a day excursion to Hakodate from Aomori on this fall trip. WE plan to do an indepth tour of Hokkaido/Sapporo in May so may I ask for your expertise again in the spring?

Are the trams to the historical area or to Goryokaku Fort within walking distance from the Hakodate train station? What about the cable car? How accessible is it from the station?

Do you have a favorite place for Ika Meshi or is it the same everywhere? Sounds yummy!
