Train or Air from Tokyo to Sapporo

Going to travel from Tokyo to Sapporo on 21 Dec 2013 and back on 30th Dec. Should I take the Rail Pass or book a budget airline? Most of the budget airline do not allow booking in Dec yet.. only up to Oct 2013.

Air is the normal recommendation. The only time I advise train travel on this route is if you are either 1) a huge train fan; or 2) you will be making some stops in between to see other places.

Keep in mind that if you take a sleeper train, for certain sleeper berths, you will have to pay supplemental charges even if you have a JR Pass.

The cheapest option is to book add-on fares to your international flights(~120USD return), failing that, air pass products from ANA or JAL(100 - 130USD each way).

Night train accommodation for this journey (mandatory, even with a JR pass) costs more than a stay at 3 star hotel.

Assuming you're not going to be travelling much outside of Sapporo or Tokyo air would make the most sense. If you want to travel in Hokkaido then a JR Hokkaido Pass and if you want to take in some sights and spend a few days making your way from Tokyo to Hokkaido then rail. But it sounds like you don't have the time for either of those two options so air is probably best for you. Also, as your time frame is 10 days you'd have to get a 14 day pass so definitely not going to be worth it in your case.
