Thanks. Would you suggest reserving tickets ahead of time, or would it be ok to just show up at Miyajimaguchi Station to purchase tickets when I'm ready to depart for Kyoto?
If you are using JR Pass, you are restricted to Hikari and Kodama which run less frequently and normally only have 6 carriages, so you may want to reserve a few days in advance if you want to sit together.

Don't forget the Sakura Shinkansen which is covered by the JR Pass. It has 8 cars but reserved seats often sell out (especially Green) so booking a few days ahead is a good advice.
While for Hiroshima to Kyoto with JR Pass, you normally use Hikari, which sometimes goes to Kyoto, usually you have to change at Okayama or Shin Osaka. Also many Hikari trains stop at just about every station between Hiroshima and Shin Osaka, which makes it no faster than Kodama. Sakura is faster, stopping at fewer stations - just requires a change in Shin Osaka.Edited: 02 April 2017, 18:41
From Hiroshima to Kyoto: There are only 4 Hikari trains/day. Of those only one that depart 6:13 goes directly to Kyoto. It's best to take the Sakura to Shin-Osaka and transfer to another Shinkansen to Kyoto. Hikari doesn't go to Kyoto, except the one that depart at 6:13.
Hikari vs. Kodama: Definitely take the Hikari if possible as it stops at fewer stations. Kodama stops at every station and it sometimes stops up to ~15 minutes to let other faster trains go by.
