Which rail pass you need depends on your itinerary.

Do some research on Western Japan - it's great place to visit with lots of history, scenic places not over-run with tourists, plenty of national parks - you can do daytrips to Okayama, the inland sea, Kyushu, Yamaguchi or Hiroshima prefecture.

Consider westjr.co.jp/global/…

And research at some of these websites:

Hiroshima is very builtup city and when it comes tomajor attractions it has far less to offer than many other more scenic cities in japan. In fact you could basically cover it in a day or two. Do of course go to the atomic bomb sites and certainly to miyajima which you can reach by taking the #2 cable car from the train station and going to the end of the line where you will find the ferry terminal to the island. These are both amazing places and the atomic park and especially the museum are very poignant. The trains are very fast in Japan and you will easily be able to reach both osaka and Kyoto on day trips both of which are packed with some amazing sights. In fact on one ofthe days i would recommend you arrive at kyoto train station by10 am and join the "walk in kyoto, talk in english tour". It takes about 5 hours and will take you round a lot of the back streets of Kyoto. Not only will you see some interesting sights our guide was able toanswer just about anything anyone wanted to know about Japan and its traditions. Sje even showed us ther wedding pictures. It finishes by the Kiyumizu dera temple which is one of Kyotos main attractions. It would make for a great day trip from Hisoshima.

have a great trip

If you are up for biking, lots of people bicycle to Shikoku from the Hiroshima area. It's a great time. You can also take the ferry to Matsuyama and see a smaller city with a nice castle and famous Onsen.
