How to travel from Hiroshima to Narita Airport in Tokyo

We are traveling to Japan in May of 2014 and will be ending the trip in Hiroshima with breakfast on Monday May 19 and need to get back to Narita Airport in Tokyo for the flight home in the late afternoon. Is that reasonable or do we need to stay overnight at the airport and fly back the next day? I assume that we would use the train to get back to Tokyo. How many transfers are involved?

It's not the transfers that are the issue. Hiroshima to Narita Airport is 973.5km (605 American miles). The fastest railway connection is the JR Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen's Nozomi No.108 departing at 06:00, arriving at Tokyo Station at 10:03. The connecting JR Narita Express No.19 leaves at 10:33, arriving at Narita Airport at 11:27.

That said, with the JR Pass, you are not allowed to travel on the Nozomi service. You can ride the Hikari service on Shinkansen instead, more precisely Hikari No.460, which will leave Hiroshima at 06:14 and arrive at Tokyo Station at 11:40. The connecting Narita Express leaves at 12:03 and arrives at Narita Airport at 12:58.

Unless accidents and natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons prevent the trains, they run on schedule to the seconds. The average delay per train throughout the year is 0.6 minutes on Shinkansen.

You'd probably have to skip breakfast at your hotel, but you'd have enough choices of bento boxes or sandwiches to eat while on train at Hiroshima Station and on board the train from the wagon sales.

Taking the ANA 3236 flight from Hiroshima Airport at 07:55 arriving at Narita Airport T1 at 09:35 is an option, but you'd have to start early as Hiroshima Airport is about 50 minutes away from Hiroshima City center by bus. Check other flights by JAL to Narita. Most flights serve the larger airport in Tokyo, Haneda Airport, which is used mainly for domestic flights. Haneda-Narita requres a 1 hour bus connection.

the only reasonable option(at least for me) is to fly. 2 flights per day meant to connect to international flights.

What time exactly is the flight home? If it's after~5pm, you can take trains from Hiroshima even after having breakfast.

Flying is of course, easier, though.
