Hiroshima Info

Hey fellas

Planning to make use of our JR passes with a day to Hiroshima but I have a few questions. Once we arrive at Hiroshima station, how do we get to the main memorial park and museum area. Is it by tram? Is it relatively easy to get to?

A plan of action is sounding like visiting the dome, park, museum, and castle, then heading over to look at the shops around Hondori Street and just wander. Does that sound enough to do for a day trip?

Also this Okonomimura dish, what's it all about?

You can walk for about 20 minutes from the Station but yes the tram is the way to go.

Is it easy? - Well, it's as difficult as ordering Cheeseburger at McDonald's (much less easier than ordering plain coffee at Starbucks).

I think you should also go to Miyajima for the Itsukushima Shrine after the Museum, the Park, the Dome, the Castle in Hiroshima, perhaps.

I meant "much easier", not "much less easier". Sorry.

We visited Hiroshima on May 19 & 20. It is a beautiful city and very easy to get around. We stayed right at the Station at the Granvia Hotel, took the tram to the A-Bomb Dome, about 15 minutes, no transfers. For Miyajima, we took the train and it also was very simple, no transfers, and you got off right next to the ferry to Miyajima Island. We loved Hiroshima and wished we had allocated an extra day. It is a total contrast to Tokyo, much more casual & relaxed. Lots of chatter & laughter on the street car and train, so different than the silence of a Tokyo subway car!

The last trains for JR Pass users from Hiroshima for Shin-Osaka (with connections to Kyoto but not for Tokyo) are:

Sakura No.570 departing at 20:48 (arrival 22:21), Sakura No.572 at 21:20 (arr 22:49) and Hikari No.444 at 21:58 (arr 23:32). If you start early in the morning you'd have enough time for Miyajima as well.
