Best 5 Day Itinerary - What Would You Do?

HI!

My partner and I (23 and 21) are staying in Kyoto at The Monterey from the 6th till the 11th, and have absolutely no plans as yet!

We were just going to wing it, but a few suggestions would be great!

Would be interested to see what everyone recommends. Any helpful tips or suggestions would be great!

PS Please offer best advice on transport in Kyoto :)

Thanks everyone!

There's a Raku bus that runs along all the famous tourist spots in Kyoto. Very convenient and easy to use.

What kinds of things are you interested in doing/seeing? History, culture, gardens, city life.... It's hard to make recommendations without knowing what your interests are.

Try these two web sites for some basic ideas about what is there:

http://www.japan-guide.com/

http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/

On the JNTO site, find the Kyoto section and download the walking maps.

If you are interested in general tourist sites, it works well to organize your choices by areas of the city, and walk between sites as much as possible.

Some people take the Kyoto city buses, personally I find the buses take a long time and can get stuck in traffic sometimes. So I take a subway to the stop closest to where I want to go and then either walk or take a short taxi ride. You can also rent bikes in Kyoto really cheap, and it's a common way to get around.

We are doing 5 days also....

2 days in Kyoto

1 day Nara

1 day Himeji

1 day Osaka

Though we may skip Himeji, cause it looks like it will close a few days before we arrive. I have looked at the links that others have posted and can't really figure out what is happening there after April 11. I did just read somewhere that April 5th is "castle day" and it is free, so if you are there that day, would be a good day trip. (I THINK that was the day, but check out the official website)

I just spent a day in Nara (well worth it) and a half day in Kyoto (frustrating due to the crowds and time consumed from getting to any venue). Study up and Nara and you will find many interesting things to see. The main beef I have with Kyoto is that logistics are difficult, both on weekdays and weekends. Nara is very lightly visited on working week days.
