Arashiyama or Sagaarashiyama?

I'm going to Arashiyama to check out autumn colors, see the bamboo forest etc. From Kyoto station, what stop should I take? Based on japan guide, it should be sagaarashiyama, but when I look at google maps, seems the attractions are near arashiyama station? Which is nearer to the entrance?

There are about 4 different Arashiyama Stations for the different rail companies. It depends on your starting point which train line will be most convenient to use. If you scroll down to the map on JapanGuide website you will see the rail map showing different lines:

1) If coming from JR Kyoto Station get off at JR Saga Arashiyama Station.

2) or arrive on the Keifuku Randen line - Arashiyama Station

3) or Hankyu Line - Arashiyama Hankyu station http://rail.hankyu.co.jp/en/

4) 'Arashiyama Torokko Station' is for the scenic sightseeing train called Torokko. http://www.sagano-kanko.co.jp/eng/

Arashiyama and Saga Arashiyama stations are not that far apart, just a few minutes walk.

If it's the main drag you're talking about then Arashiyama Station on Keifuku Tram. Once you step out of the said station, Both Tenryuji and Togets Bridge are almost within a stone's throw.

The Keifuku Arashiyama line isn't very convenient if your starting point is Kyoto station. http://www.hyperdia.com/ is a great site to plan railway trips in Japan. The Keifuku Arashiyama station is there called 'ARASHIYAMA(TRAMWAY' and for Kyoto station just type 'KYOTO'.

www.japan-guide.com/e/e3912.html#jump_access explains access options for Arashiyama. Japan-guide.com is another site I really recommend, it's really great for answering practical questions like this. Google maps street view is good to use to get a feeling for distances like in this case, between two neighbouring stations.

This will take a bit longer than what hyerdia suggests, but I advise you take subway karasuma line to shijo-karasuma (2nd stop) and then walk from here (passing citi bank) to shijo-omiya station on keifuku line. This can eliminate necessary transfers on hyperdia. Yes, that makes you walk a few blocks dead straight on shijo street to reach shijo-omiya; yet, I think it's easier/less cumbersome than making transfers more than twice along your way.

Another possibility is just to forget about taking the Keifuku line altogether, and go by JR from Kyoto Station direct to Saga Arashiyama. It is a few minutes walk along a flat road to Tenryuji from there. If there are mobility issues that mean you want to avoid walking, perhaps taking a taxi from Saga Arashiyama would be a good idea.

Thank you all, will just take Saga Arashiyama to avoid the transfers.
