Two days in Kyoto

I will be arriving from Tokyo and have two days in Kyoto before departing from Kansai Airport. Please suggest an itinerary covering the must-see sights. I would also like to spend half day in Nara, what is the best way to do this trip? I might consider taking a conducted tour if half day is not enough to cover this on my own.

I highly recommend checking out this website for great itineraries: http://insidekyoto.com/

If I was only in Kyoto / Nara for two days:

Day One:

- Fushimi Inari

- Kinkaku-ji

- Gion District + Kiyomizu-dera + dinner in Pontocho Alley (all within walking distance)

Day Two:

- Either Arashiyama region in the morning and Nara in the afternoon or Philosopher's path area in the morning + Nara in the afternoon

This is a very frequently asked question (so people do get tired of answering to it; please search for past posts).

I don't think any guided tour is "necessary" if you take a good look at guidebooks like Lonely Planet: Kyoto or Frommer's Japan as well as Japan-Guide, Kyoto Travel Guide (official tourism website), and related pages and downloadable pdf walking guide of JNTO.

There are over a hundred temples listed in local tourism guides; there are a dozen which might be listed in "the most popular sites" (names such as Kiyomizudera, Kinkakuji, Fushimi Inari, Nijo Castle, Nanzenji, Tofukuji, Eikando, Sanju Sangendo, Ginkakuji, Tenryuji and Daikakuji in Arashiyama should be included). You can see the rankings on Kyoto page of Tripadvisor. You can't and don't have to do all in one visit; there are also other things to see and do in Kyoto.

Nara can be accessed by two main ways from Kyoto: 1) Kintetsu Railway (Ltd Exp [+500 yen] or Express), 2) JR Nara Line. Kintetsu has an upper hand in the competition, as it has more frequent and faster service, and because JR station in Nara is a bit away from the center than Kintetsu Station.

See Japan-Guide and Nara City Official Tourism website (http://narashikanko.or.jp/en/) for details on what to see inside Nara City.

If you can just allow two days for Kyoto, do a Higashiyama walk on the first day (including perhaps Fushimi Inari), then Kinkakuji + Nijo Castle + Arashiyama walk on the second day (or vice versa). Visit whichever temple/shrines you would like to see on the way.

I would plan enough so that you have some flexibility. With such a short visit, I don't know if it worth backtracking to the train station to do a half-day trip to Nara, considering all there is to see in Kyoto.

Thanks for all the replies. It is sad that I don't have much time in Kyoto but would like to make the most of what I can. I will go through all the links and suggestions provided and work out a decent plan to cover at least the most recommended sights. Thanks once again.
