Luggage on the train

We will be traveling to Kyoto in July from Kagoshima by train. Because we are traveling on a JR Pass we cannot take the Shinkansen Nozomi. Most of the trains we can take connect through Osaka. I am trying to avoid the after work rush hour. We will have luggage (medium sized backpacks) with us and think that might be very difficult when the trains are full. If we are on a JR Special Rapid Service train from Osaka to Kyoto at 15:44 to 16:05 with that be early enough in the day that the luggage will not be a problem?

Take the Sakura Shinkansen from Kagoshima-Chuo to Shin-Osaka then take the Hikari or Kodama Shinkansen to Kyoto. Reserve your seats a few days in advance as the Sakura trains get fully booked often. If you use the Shinkansen all the way, you don't have to worry about luggage in a packed commuter train such as the JR Special Rapid. The station you transfer is Shin-Osaka, not Osaka.

Or forward your luggage to your next destination and carry 1 days/nights clothes in a day pack. The luggage forwarding is superb, utterly reliable and for most distances takes 24 hours.
