Safety during Malaysian Elections

We have a family holiday planned to Malaysia over the coming months, and am slightly concerned that this appears to coincide with planned government elections.

Please excuse my ignorance, however, is Malaysia a safe place to be during election campaigns or election periods?

Just would hate to be caught up in a Bangkok style situation or other similar undemocratic democracies.

In any other normal circumstance, Malaysia's difference is the reason why we want to travel there, but with 2 children, do not want to be there at a time where issues may arise.

Thank you leopang. That is very reassuring. We are so excited to visit in April.

The last time i was there was in 1990, and it is our first visit as a family .
